Fernandez gave a good performance of seven innings, which struck out 10, the most in his fledgling career, and the Miami Marlins spoiled the return of Westbrook, after an elbow injury, beating 5-4 on Friday St. Louis Cardinals.

The 20-year Cuban is the first pitcher in less than 21 strikes out 10 enemies or more since Felix Hernandez accomplished the feat with Seattle in 2007.

Using his curve, Fernandez (4-3) made 107 pitches, the most in his career, and allowed three runs, two earned.

“I was looking forward to this opening,” said Fernandez. “They are a very good team with tremendous hitters. Everybody knows the Cardinals, from leadoff to ninth can cause disaster in two seconds”.

Westbrook (2-2), who sat out with a swollen elbow, worked five innings in his first game since May 8. He allowed five runs, including two dirty due to poorly measured grounder by second baseman Matt Carpenter, and his 2.05 ERA deteriorated.

“He was not as thin as it is normally, but coming off an injury,” said Cardinals manager Mike Matheny.

Fernandez calmed down after admitting two runs and three hits in the first act. Resolved in three men the third inning, striking out Carlos Beltran, Matt Holliday and Allen Craig.

“He had total control of the game after the first inning,” said Marlins manager, Mike Redmond. “Set the tone against a great team, a great batting order, and it was fun to see that. Can shoot very well.”

The right of Santa Clara improved to a 4-1 record in his last eight starts with a 2.42 ERA. He helped his own cause, to drive in a run with a single.

“He made many outstanding things,” said Matheny. “We knew it would be very difficult.”

Beltran singled in the fifth to extend his hitting streak to 13 games to hit sticking.

In another game of the National League, the Pittsburgh Pirates blanked the Dodgers 3-0 in Los Angeles, which lacked the guidance of manager Don Mattingly suspended one game for his role in the brawl on Tuesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Arizona pitcher Ian Kennedy, was suspended for 10 games and infielder Eric Hinske five following the brawl generated by a pitch to Cuban Yasiel Puig, followed by several reprisals.

In total there were eight suspensions, including managers Mattingly and Kirk Gibson.

The Diamondbacks fell 2-1 in the game against the San Diego Padres.

El novato cubano José Fernández superó al oxidado Jake Westbrook, y el equipo con la peor foja en las mayores se impuso al que tiene el mejor récord, informa la AP.

El cubano de 20 años es el primer lanzador de menos de 21 que poncha a 10 enemigos o más desde que el venezolano Félix Hernández logró la proeza con Seattle en 2007.
