ELIAN GONZALEZ, DE SU VIDA EN CUBA .
Cárdenas, ciudad de la provincia de Matanzas, a unos 150 kilómetros al este de La Habana, es famosa por el ron Arechabala, las bicicletas en sus calles y el balserito Elián González, quien en noviembre de 1999, con solo 6 años, fue embarcado ilegalmente desde Cuba con destino a la Florida por su madre Elizabeth Brotons.
Se conoce el trágico final de la historia. La madre y el padrastro de Elián murieron en la travesía a bordo de una chalupa de aluminio y caucho y el pequeño fue encontrado con vida aferrado a un flotador.
Después, parientes en Miami intentaron no devolver al niño a su padre. El progenitor de Elián González, en consorcio con el gobierno de Fidel Castro, armó una tángana monumental.
Las leyes de Estados Unidos fallaron a favor del régimen cubano. Fue lo justo. Pero el episodio se convirtió en un culebrón de marcados tintes políticos que provocó la ruptura entre los parientes de Elián a ambos lados del Estrecho de la Florida.
¿Pero qué hace González en la actualidad? Del muchacho poco se sabe. El próximo 6 de diciembre cumplirá 20 años. En 2010 estudiaba en un colegio militar. Cuando Fidel Castro gobernaba, Elián era noticia con frecuencia.
Su padre, Juan Miguel González, llegó a ser diputado nacional. Antes de lo ocurrido, era cantinero en un centro turístico de Varadero. Su lealtad al régimen lo propulsó a la vida social y política de Cárdenas. Mejoró ostensiblemente su nivel de vida. Elián residía con su padre, dos hermanos menores y su madrastra en una casa color marrón, al borde de la carretera que va al poblado matancero de Coliseo.
En 2010, acompañado por un periodista español, intentamos hacerle una entrevista a Elián. En un bar de Cárdenas nos habían indicado la dirección exacta de la casa. Pero nos dijeron que tuviéramos cuidado. El entonces adolescente era protegido por una escolta de hasta cuatro personas.
Yo solo quería hacerle preguntas triviales: si tenía novia, qué equipo de fútbol seguía, si mantenía contacto con sus parientes en Miami, dónde pasaba su tiempo libre, qué música le gustaba y la carrera universitaria por la que se inclinaba.
Elián no fue un niño cualquiera. Con solo 6 años vio morir ahogada a su madre. Probablemente ella deseaba un futuro mejor para su hijo y arriesgó su vida en una embarcación rústica, atravesando un turbulento Estrecho de la Florida infestado de tiburones.
Ya cuando regresó de Estados Unidos con su padre se notaba cierto retraimiento. Hablaba poco y leía mal en las presentaciones oficiales orquestadas por su Fidel Castro, que se convirtió en una especie de tutor o padrino de Elián.
El menor estaba más para estar sentado en el desván de un buen psicólogo que para pretender montarlo en el carrusel de la farándula política. Su manera de comportarse en público era demasiado artificial. Un montaje bien diseñado.
Hace tres años tocamos a la puerta de la casa donde residía Elián González y su familia. Un tipo con pinta de militar, se presentó como Miguel, mulato de complexión fuerte y 1.75 de estatura, al principio nos trató con recelo.
Luego el hombre se relajó y dio algunos detalles. “Elián estudia en una escuela para cadetes. Le dan pases los fines de semana y suele ir con su padre al delfinario. Le gustan mucho los delfines. Para hablar o entrevistarlo hay que traer una autorización de las altas instancias del partido comunista”, informó el escolta Miguel
Los guardaespaldas residían en una vivienda anexa a la casa de la familia de Elián. El escolta también dijo que el joven necesita acompañantes “porque muchas personas se le acercan a pedirle cosas y hacerle preguntas inapropiadas”
Estábamos hablando con el militar cuando un auto ruso, Lada 2107, blanco y con cristales ahumados, hizo entrada en la casa. El conductor subió aceleradamente la ventanilla para no ser visto. Él y otro escolta, a la carrera, abrieron el portón de la casa y en uno de los teléfonos escuchamos decir: “Llegó el hombre”. Presuntamente era Juan Miguel, el padre de Elián.
Nos despidieron no de muy buena manera. De los acontecimientos terribles que vivió Elián como recuerdos han quedado un museo pintado de amarillo intenso llamado Batalla de Ideas, en un antiguo cuartel de bomberos en el centro de Cárdenas. Y esporádicas noticias en los medios oficiales, al cumplirse un onomástico del famoso joven, casi siempre en una fecha redonda.
A veces ha aparecido junto a su padre, en alguna comparecencia pública, rodeado de jerarcas y muy cerca del General Raúl Castro. La aburrida prensa oficial cubana nunca le ha hecho una entrevista seria. A fondo.
En Varadero indagué sobre Juan Miguel, el padre, quien durante mucho tiempo trabajó en el balneario. Nadie supo contestarme. Solo rumores. Sobre Elián nada se conocía. Incluso, personas que dicen residir muy cerca de su domicilio desconocen su paradero.
El gobierno alega que lo hace para proteger la intimidad del joven. Cuando lo creen pertinente lo muestran en determinados actos oficiales, como un trofeo de la Guerra Fría que todavía existe entre Cuba y Estados Unidos.
Pero la vida real de Elián González Brotons sigue siendo un auténtico enigma.
