The Cuban boxer Yuriorkis Gamboa, who has developed a successful career in professional boxing in the United States in the past eight years, is currently visiting Cuba for the first time since fleeing in 2006, said the fighter himself, reports AFP.
“Since I got off the plane was a thrill after another. I am not exaggerating when I say that I felt that all Guantánamo stands to greet me. A hug. See you soon,” Gamboa wrote, 33, nicknamed “El Ciclon Guantanamo “in his page on Facebook.
The boxer fled the Cuban team during a training camp in Venezuela in 2006, along with his countrymen Odlanier Solis and Yan Barthelemy.
He began his professional career in Germany and settled in Miami in 2007 reached between 2008 and last year several titles featherweight champion of the World Boxing Association (WBA) and International Boxing Federation (IBF).

El boxeador cubano Yuriorkis Gamboa, quien ha desarrollado una exitosa carrera en el boxeo profesional de Estados Unidos en los últimos ocho años, se encuentra de visita en Cuba por primera vez desde que escapó en 2006, anunció el propio púgil, reporta la AFP.
“Desde que me bajé del avión ha sido una emoción tras la otra. No exagero cuando les digo que sentí que todo Guantánamo está de pie para recibirme. Un abrazo. Los veo pronto”, escribió Gamboa, de 33 años y apodado “El Ciclón de Guantánamo”, en su página en la red social Facebook.
El boxeador se fugó de la escuadra cubana durante un campamento de entrenamiento en Venezuela en 2006, junto con sus compatriotas Odlanier Solís y Yan Barthelemy.
Inició su carrera profesional en Alemania y se radicó en Miami en 2007 alcanzado entre 2008 y el año pasado varios títulos de campeón de peso pluma de la Asociación Mundial de Boxeo (WBA) y de la Federación Internacional de Boxeo (IBF).
Gamboa, considerado uno de los púgiles más fogosos y espectaculares del boxeo profesional, exhibe una foja 24 triunfos (17 por KO), con solo una derrota, frente a Terence Crawford, por el título de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo (WBO) en 2014.
Como amateur, Gamboa conquistó los títulos olímpico en Atenas-2004 y panamericano en Santo Domingo-2003. También fue bronce en el Mundial de China en 2005.
La ley cubana establece que un deportista que decide fugarse de la Isla o durante un evento en el extranjero tiene que esperar al menos ocho años para poder visitar el país.
Otras estrellas del deporte cubano, como los exgrandes ligas José Ariel Contreras y Reinaldo Ordoñez, también viajaron a la Isla en los últimos años.
