ORIGEN DEL SANDWICH CUBANO: ELENA RUZ.
A finales de la década de 1920, Elena Ruz Valdés-Fauli una joven de la alta sociedad habanera y sus amiguitas acostumbraban ir a la cafetería de “El Carmelo” en Calzada y D en el Vedado.
La joven Elena tenía por costumbre dar instrucciones para qué le prepararan un determinado sándwich, se trataba de un pan de media noche (el cual debía de tostarse por sí solo hasta que estuviera durito y calentito), entonces se le ponía pavo, queso crema majado o batido y mermelada de fresa”. Durante más de un año, cada vez que Elena Ruz visitaba el lugar pedía su extraña y deliciosa combinación, hasta que un día se le ocurrió pedirle al encargado que lo incluyera en el menú para no tener que explicarle lo mismo cada vez.
Esa misma noche cuando Elena y sus amigas volvieron al Carmelo tuvieron la sorpresa de ver un letrero en luz neón que decía “Sandwich Elena Ruz, 25 centavos” (sus padres quedaron boquiabiertos). El precio en estos días parece cosa de risa, pero en ese entonces era bastante caro, cuando una “Medianoche” costaba cinco centavos, un “sandwich cubano” valía 10 centavos, el Elena Ruz se vendía a 25 centavos. No obstante la mamá de Elena “… se indignó, porque según ella, daba la impresión de que estaban vendiendo a su hija por 25 centavos”.
Algunas amigas de Elena de la época que venían a Miami de compras, le contaron que en una farmacia del centro vendían su sándwich, Cuando la familia Ruz fue a vivir a España en 1971, allí también encontraron el Elena Ruz sandwich”.
