“Viva”, the Irish candidate for the last edition of the Oscars, hits today Billboard with a message very clear that Cuban players share Héctor Medina and Luis Alberto García in an interview with Efe: “Be yourself”.
“Viva”, directed by Irish Paddy Breathnach and written by her compatriot Mark O’Halloran, tells the story of a young homosexual (Héctor Medina) who are prostitutes on the streets of Havana in order to survive.
The young man discovers that the only moments that feel liberated from the problems of his life is when he gets on a stage and becomes completely in live, its artistic character, who bares his soul while he sings songs about impossible love, pain and loss.
“There are countries, including ours, where there are many prejudices still against the different” assessed Garcia, who plays Mama, the musical tutor of the young.
“Even it is only against the different sexual orientation, but also against anyone who think differently or wears a different skin color. It must be said enough already. The world is wide and plural. Plurality is essential and must be accepted to the different”, he said.

Héctor Medina is the young Cuban actor who carries the weight of the film on his shoulders.
“I learned to walk in heels and practiced even while doing normal tasks in the rental house where I stayed. All the scenes are strong and emotional. It was strong enough”, he said.
Especially striking are the scenes where the young dreams collide squarely with the conservative vision of his father, an alcoholic exboxeador played by Jorge Perugorría.
Medina hopes that the message of the film cale among young people, inspiration and help them get ahead if similar situations are experienced.
In any case, not strange to Garcia that a foreign look as the Breathnach manages to capture the Cuban idiosyncrasy in a vibrant manner.

“Viva”, la candidata irlandesa para la pasada edición de los Óscar, llega hoy a la cartelera con un mensaje muy claro que comparten los actores cubanos Héctor Medina y Luis Alberto García en una entrevista con Efe: “Sé tú mismo”.
“Viva”, dirigida por el irlandés Paddy Breathnach y escrita por su compatriota Mark O’Halloran, cuenta la historia de un joven homosexual (Héctor Medina) que se prostituye en las calles de La Habana para poder sobrevivir.
El joven descubre que los únicos momentos en los que se siente liberado de los problemas de su vida es cuando se sube a un escenario y se transforma por completo en Viva, su personaje artístico, que desnuda su alma mientras entona canciones sobre amores imposibles, el dolor y la pérdida.
“Hay países, incluido el nuestro, donde hay muchos prejuicios todavía contra el diferente”, valoró García, que encarna a Mama, el tutor musical del joven.
“Ni siquiera es únicamente contra el de opción sexual diferente, sino también contra el que piensa diferente o luce un color de piel diferente. Hay que decir basta ya. El mundo es ancho y plural. La pluralidad es fundamental y hay que aceptar al diferente”, declaró.

Héctor Medina es el joven actor cubano que lleva el peso de la película sobre sus hombros.
“Aprendí a caminar en tacones y practicaba incluso mientras hacía las labores normales en la casa de alquiler donde me quedaba. Todas las escenas son fuertes y con carga emocional. Fue bastante fuerte”, manifestó.
Especialmente llamativas son las escenas donde los sueños del joven chocan de lleno con la visión conservadora de su padre, un exboxeador alcohólico interpretado por Jorge Perugorría.
Medina espera que el mensaje de la película cale entre los jóvenes, sea fuente de inspiración y les ayude a salir adelante si están experimentado situaciones similares.
En cualquier caso, a García no le extraña que una mirada extranjera como la de Breathnach logre plasmar la idiosincrasia cubana de una manera tan vibrante.
“De vez en cuando llega un talento de fuera con una mirada desprovista de toda clase de prejuicios, y es capaz de mostrar la realidad cubana como no pueden hacerlo muchos directores cubanos”, explicó el actor.
García, un actor experimentado y curtido en mil batallas, supo ver la calidad de la historia según el guión cayó en sus manos, y se atrevió con un tipo de personaje que jamás había interpretado.
“Por eso fue un reto. Sentí que tenía que hacerlo. Si Héctor, un tipo tan joven, puede hacer cosas tan buenas como lo que hace aquí, yo no me puedo quedar sentado de brazos cruzados. Tengo que arriesgarme cada día como si tuviera 16 años”, indicó.
“Yo espero que mis dos niñas pequeñas puedan vivir en un país donde sean felices y plenas sin soñar con irse a otro lugar. Cuba debe abrirse, está en ello y es algo positivo. Ahora mismo estamos de moda”, apuntó García entre risas.
Medina, por su parte, espera que los cubanos dejen de “soñar” y se pongan manos a la obra para “cambiar sus vidas” y “buscar sus caminos” sin necesidad de injerencias de “circunstancias externas o gobiernos”.
