THE MYSTERY OF FIDEL CASTRO FIRST WIFE.
On October 12, 1948, Fidel Castro married Mirtha [Mirta] Francisca de la Caridad Díaz-Balart Gutiérrez, a student in the Faculty of Philosophy at Havana University. Castro was then in the last stages of law school; Mirtha was a native of Banes, the daughter of a general, and her brother was to become one of Batista’s officers. They were married in a Roman Catholic Church in Orient Province, not far from Castro’s birthplace. On their honeymoon in Miami, Florida, Fidel was forced to pawn his watch and other valuables. His financial difficulties were relieved, however, when he obtained money from his family in Cuba. He retrieved his property and prolonged the honeymoon.
On the morning of Castro’s release from the Isla de Pinos Prison after the amnesty for Moncada, his wife was nowhere to be seen. She later divorced him while he was in exile in Mexico in 1955.
Her brother Raphael [Rafael] Diaz Balart; an ardent Batistiano, who was undersecretary to Ramon Hermida, a minister of the interior to Batista. His resignation was forced after the publication of a letter he wrote to Hermida in which he censured him for a talk he had with Castro in the Isla de Pinos Prison.
Fidel and Mirtha Castro had one child, a son, Fidel [Fidelito] Castro Jr., who was born September 1, 1949. The picture at the right, (one of the few extant shots of Mirtha) [page 43 PHOTO of Mirtha and Fidelito (photo credit to George Robert Little, Jr. 1956)] shows mother and son embracing during a reunion in Mexico City. Mirtha had claimed the boy had been taken from her by Castro’s sister who, in turn, claimed the boy had been kidnaped to bring pressure on Castro to end the revolution. Mirtha denied this and the Mexican authorities dropped their investigation when they were satisfied this was a private not a political matter. The boy is now with Castro in accordance with Cuban law which states that children of divorced parents stay with their father.
Mirtha remarried and went to live to Spain with her husband Emilio Nuñez Blanco, son of Emilio Nuñez Portuondo former ambassador of Cuba at the United Nations. Mirtha and Emilio had two daughters Mirtha and Meki both actually living in Spain. Fidelito, Castro’s son with Mirtha lives in Cuba, people who knows the family states that he is very close to his mother.
Fidelito, who occasionally came to Madrid to visit his mother was a good student at the Moscow University where he studied physics and mathematics. He graduated cum laude in Nuclear Physics and married a Soviet, Olga Smirnova, mother of his sons Fidel III and Mirtha, that studied the same his father’s career. But married the eldest son of Castro experience doesn’t end there. Married for the second time to a Cuban, Victoria Barreiro, daughter of a Cuban intelligence service general.
Fidelito has played in Cuba important positions: in 1980 he was appointed responsible for the Commission of Atomic Energy and nuclear Affairs Secretary. After a period of ostracism, in 1999 he became Adviser to the Ministry of basic industry.

It was getting dark when the home of Gutiérrez, on the street of Alonso Cano in Madrid, the phone rang. On the other side of the line, Fidelito, from Havana, asked her to go to visit him. She wanted to stay in Madrid, because her second husband, an Alzheimer’s disease patient was in very bad shape, then she would enjoy a few days of vacation with her daughter, who is a professor at the Universidad Complutense, and perhaps in the end, if, he would go to visit him.
“No, no, mom, time is short; you have to come as soon as possible,” Fidelito told her with an imperative voice. That mandate was surprised. “It is necessary that you come”, he repeated the son, without further details, for more than 50 years everything in Cuba – above all, the telephone lines – is controlled.
Mirtha, already with 78 years, understood the message, changed its plans and accelerated the preparations for his trip to Cuba. They were the first days of the hot month of July in a torrid Madrid. Formally, going on vacation to see his son.
Three weeks later, on Tuesday, August 1, the world knew the news of the abdication of Fidel Castro to his brother Raul, head of the Revolutionary Army, five years younger than him, a very serious disease which obliged him to be urgently intervened in a clinic. Of their ailments, nothing is known for the sake of the imposition of ‘State secrets’, but “it is possible to have stomach cancer in metastasis stage,” said a source close to the family at that time.
In the meantime, while she was in Havana and one of those paradoxes of life, Emilio, the second husband of Mirtha, married for more than 45 years to her and had two daughters, died suddenly at a residence in the North of Madrid, in which it was interned and had overtaken a lung condition.
Mirtha Diaz-Balart, the first and only wife that Fidel Castro was married by the Church, was one of the first people to know the disease of the Cuban leader and to travel from Spain, where he resides since 1968, to be with the family of the Commander.
She has been able to visit her ex-husband with due reservations to not raise suspicions and personally knowing his poor state of health. At the crucial moments, when one said farewell to life, family and friends, they forget differences and the Commander only has the love and the querencia, a connoisseur of the family of the Cuban leader said.
The Old comandante still shows off once in a while…. Mirtha went back to Spain where she lives with her daughter Mirtha…

EL MISTERIO SOBRE LA PRIMERA ESPOSA DE FIDEL CASTRO
El 12 de octubre de 1948, Fidel Castro se casó con Mirtha [Mirta] Francisca de la Caridad Díaz-Balart Gutiérrez, estudiante de la Facultad de Filosofía de la Universidad de La Habana. Castro se encontraba en las últimas etapas de la facultad de derecho, Mirtha era natural de Banes, la hija de un general, y su hermano se convertiría en uno de los oficiales de Batista. Se casaron en una iglesia católica romana en Oriente provincia, no lejos del lugar de nacimiento de Castro. En su luna de miel en Miami, Florida, Fidel se vio obligado a empeñar su reloj y otros objetos de valor. Fidel Castro después de divorciarse de Mirtha nunca se volvió a casar. “Me casé una vez, no hace falta más”, dijo Castro una vez. Lo que sin duda ha proporcionado Mirtha un estatus especial. Estaba oscureciendo cuando la casa de Gutiérrez, en la calle de Alonso Cano en Madrid, el teléfono sonó. En el otro lado de la línea, Fidelito, desde La Habana, le pidió que fuera a visitarlo. Quería quedarse en Madrid, porque su segundo marido, un enfermo de Alzheimer enfermedad estaba en muy mal estado, entonces ella disfrutaría de unos días de vacaciones con su hija, quien es profesor en la Universidad Complutense, y tal vez al final, si, iba a visitarlo.
“No, no, mamá, el tiempo es corto, hay que llegar tan pronto como sea posible”, le dijo Fidelito con voz imperativa. Ese mandato se sorprendió. “Es necesario que vengas”, repitió el hijo, sin más detalles, por más de 50 años todo en Cuba – sobre todo, las líneas de teléfono – es controlado.
Mirtha, ya con 78 años, comprendido el mensaje, cambió sus planes y aceleró los preparativos de su viaje a Cuba. Eran los primeros días del caluroso mes de julio en un tórrido Madrid. Formalmente, ir de vacaciones a ver a su hijo.
Tres semanas más tarde, el martes 1 de agosto, el mundo conoció la noticia de la abdicación de Fidel Castro a su hermano Raúl, jefe del Ejército Revolucionario, cinco años más joven que él, una enfermedad muy grave que le obligó a ser intervenido urgentemente en una clínica. De sus dolencias, no se sabe nada por el bien de la imposición de “secretos de Estado”, pero que “es posible tener cáncer de estómago en fase de metástasis”, dijo una fuente cercana a la familia en ese momento.
Entre tanto, mientras ella estaba en La Habana y una de esas paradojas de la vida, Emilio, el segundo marido de Mirtha, casado por más de 45 años a ella y tuvo dos hijas, murió repentinamente en una residencia en el norte de Madrid, en el cual fue internado y había superado una afección pulmonar.
Mirtha Díaz-Balart, la primera y única esposa que Fidel Castro se había casado por la Iglesia, fue una de las primeras personas en conocer la enfermedad del líder cubano y para viajar desde España, donde reside desde 1968, para estar con la familia del Comandante.
Ella ha sido capaz de visitar a su ex-marido con reservas debido a no levantar sospechas y personalmente conociendo su mal estado de salud. En los momentos cruciales, cuando un adiós a la vida, la familia y los amigos, se olvidan las diferencias y el comandante sólo tiene el amor y esa querencia, dijo un viejo conocedor de la familia del líder cubano.
Desde entonces, el viejo comandante ha salido en fotos de vez en cuando …. Mirtha regresó a España, donde vive con su hija Mirtha …
