THE ISLE OF PINES, discovered by Columbus in 1494, is of special interest to Americans. After the Spanish-American war it remained in the possession of the United States for some years, later becoming a part of Cuba. Descendents of the American families who settled on the Island at that time, may still be found here – the majority of them citrus farmers. On Saturdays, British and American residents, both old-timers and newcomers, meet and visit at the Anglo-American Community Center in Nueva Gerona. There are excellent hotel accommodations, also an American School and a church for the English-speaking colony. On the Isle of Pines are found the conifers responsible for its name; also groves of sweet pink grapefruit and fields of fine cucumbers. There is a quiet charm about the place and great natural beauty. Cuba’s famous model penitentiary is here and recently the Island has been declared a free port.
