With the ‘Alacranes’ became the absolute king of the sluggers of the era, when the contest of 1949-50 won a record 15 homers.
Just, was the category that most dominated as slugger (he led three times in the circuit), but was also driven other titles, 1942-43 and 1947-48, and also won a batting title in 1943-44.
Despite being regarded more as a typical slugger, many forget that Ortiz averaged over 300 five times during his career in the Cuban winter organization.
In their winter tour of the diamond also wore the flannel of the ‘Alacranes’ of the independent championship in 1947-48, the Tigers of Marianao and ended where it began, with the Red Havana.
His batting consistent and huge home runs will never be forgotten.

Electo al Salón de la Fama del béisbol cubano en 1983, en la ciudad de Miami.
El cañonero más prominente que produjo el béisbol invernal antes de la era castrista.
Con una estatura y un poder prodigioso, de “El Gigante del Central Senado” se esperaba siempre un espectacular estacazo.
Fue en ese aspecto el tercero que más rindió, de por vida, en el circuito cubano en la etapa profesional.
En 1939-40 hizo su primera aparición en la Liga con el Habana, pero a la siguiente temporada pasó al Almendares.
Con los Alacranes se convirtió en el rey absoluto de los jonroneros de la época, cuando en el certámen de 1949-50 impuso un récord de 15 vuelacercas.
Justo, fue la categoría que más dominó como toletero (fue líder tres veces en el circuito), pero también se llevó otros títulos de impulsadas, 1942-43 y 1947-48, y además conquistó una corona de bateo en 1943-44.
Pese a ser considerado más como un típico slugger, muchos se olvidan que Ortiz promedió por encima de 300 cinco veces durante su carrera en la organización invernal cubana.
En su periplo por los diamantes invernales también vistió la franela de los Alacranes del campeonato independiente de 1947-48, los Tigres del Marianao y terminó donde comenzó, con los rojos del Habana.
Su bateo consistente y sus enormes jonrones nunca podrán ser olvidados.
Roberto Ortiz murió el 15 de Septiembre de 1971, en los Estados Unidos.
