Maria Teresa of Luxembourg (Maria Teresa Mestre Batista) was born in Marianao, Havana, Cuba, on March 22, 1956, daughter of Jose Antonio Alvarez and Maria Teresa Mestre Batista Falla. His parents lived in Cuba until he left the country in 1959. The Grand Duchess comes from a family belonging to the Cuban great society before the revolution.

María Teresa de Luxemburgo (María Teresa Mestre Batista) nació en Marianao, La Habana, Cuba, el 22 de marzo de 1956, hija de José Antonio Mestre Álvarez y María Teresa Batista Falla. Sus padres vivieron en Cuba hasta que abandonaron el país en 1959. La Gran Duquesa proviene de una familia perteneciente a la alta sociedad cubana, antes de la revolución.
Gran Duquesa de Luxemburgo por su matrimonio con el Gran Duque Enrique I de Luxemburgo. María Teresa es Licenciada en Ciencias Políticas por la Universidad de Ginebra, al igual que su marido, y precisamente en dicho centro universitario se conocieron e iniciaron su noviazgo.1
Se casó el 14 de febrero de 1981 en la Catedral de Santa María de Luxemburgo con el Gran Duque Enrique, que por entonces era el Gran Duque Heredero. Poco tiempo después del fallecimiento de su suegra, la Gran Duquesa Josefina Carlota, María Teresa se sinceró revelando que su relación con la madre de su esposo nunca había sido buena debido a su origen cubano y plebeyo.2
Hace pocos meses el Gran Duque Enrique, la Gran Duquesa María Teresa y dos de sus hijos, la princesa Alexandra y el príncipe Sebastián, pasaron sus vacaciones de primavera en Cuba, informaron medios luxemburgueses.
El cable con la noticia hablando gira: “En el trayecto visitamos el lugar de nacimiento del soberano Sus padres vivieron allí hasta que abandonó el país en 1959,.”, Pero no aclara la razón de su partida. La nota sobre la visita de la duquesa de Cuba, continúa: “La familia real de Luxemburgo también visitó el centro histórico de La Habana, la Iglesia de San Juan Bautista, en Remedios, y otras atracciones de la isla.”
El 8 de febrero de 1973, Miguel Angel Falla, el propio tío abuelo de la Duquesa falleció estando en una farmacia de Coral Gables, Florida. Fue una muerte súbita, pero quién sabe, quizás su último pensamiento fuera de frustración y tristeza por no haber podido regresar a su Patria.
