Olga and Tony Alvarez Chorens known as Olga and Tony began their careers separately, at a very early age. Olga Chorens started singing at 11 years of age in programs for children’s radio station García Serra. Later in the line child, Olga competed in the Supreme Court of Art, winning numerous contests to compete in among adults, become Estrellita Rising.
Olga noted that at age 12 heard on the radio program Cuban Rhythms del Plata, led by Tony Alvarez. The speaker then presented a model and tangos during the broadcast, and even singing with recordings air arriving from the Southern Cone were the delight of the time.
The two met when fate brought them together in 1940 to join the Orchestra Rio De La Plata.
Olga and Tony were married on May 6, 1945 and three months later, left Cuba on a tour that took 5 years throughout Latin America, from Panama City to Buenos Aires.
They were part of the theater companies of the Spanish singer Estrellita Castro and the Cuban Vedette Blanquita Amaro. It was during this tour that Olga and Tony were mature repertoire that included tangos, Peruvian waltzes and numerous romantic compositions and indigenous Latin American songbook.
The tour culminated in Buenos Aires, where Olga important graced venues such as the Tabaris and Tronic, while Tony Cuban rhythms interpreted as ‘the Guaracha Galan’. Olga still remember the night we went to see his idol Libertad Lamarque, and got to know the star of the tango and the big screen who had admired from a little girl.
On his return to Havana in 1950, Olga and Tony became a duo, starring Musical Round Coca Cola, a live radio program that aired on Radio Progreso Monday through Friday from 6:30 PM to 7:00 PM for over 7 years. Once a week on Sundays Musical Caravan performed a live radio show with the Symphony Orchestra conducted by Maestro Enrique Gonzalez Manticci.
Simultaneously, in 1951, Olga and Tony became stars of the CMQ Television, host of “El Show de Olga y Tony,” a live daily program met to 200 fans who came to see the couple read their varied repertoire, accompanied by an orchestra of real stars:
Israel Lopez “Cachao” on bass, Rolando Laserie on timbales, and Laito Castro on piano, and incredibly talented musicians who participated in choirs, footsteps of comedy and musical productions sympathetic.
The ideal partner, a nickname he earned for his talent, youth, and exaltation of family values, once a week estelarizaba “A Top 10 with Olga and Tony”, a television program in prime time.
Olga and Tony Alvarez Chorens withdrew from the Cuban stage with the arrival of Fidel Castro and the start of the Cuban Revolution. Went into exile in 1963, to Mexico, and came to Miami in the U.S., were hired by employers in New York. In the Babel of Iron sang at important venues of the time: The Teatro San Juan, Hotel Great Northern, the Alameda Room and Liborio, where they were forced to incorporate songs in English, pandering to the local public and their fans and American tourists.
His successful career in Cuba, and the many fans who had won in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico made the television producer Paquito Cordero offered them a contract for Channel 2, Telemundo in Puerto Rico. In January 1965 the show debuted in the Twelve, a daily half hour and shared segmented luminaries as El Gran Combo, Chucho Avellanet, and Luis Echegoyen and Eddie Miro. Olga and Tony repeated in the island of enchantment, the success in his native country: the last half hour estelarizaban promote family values among the dozens of fans who filled the studio daily Monday through Friday.
After nearly 15 years of success on the small screen of Puerto Rico, with its programs on Channel 7 and Channel 11 then to date with the Stars, Olga and Tony moved to Spain where he worked in nightclubs for a year, returning Miami, to make back their television broadcasts on Channel 51, TV and Telemiami Hit. Olga still retains his radio program, which began in 1989 and the couple is transmitted on Radio Mambi Univision Radio on Saturdays from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Olga Chorens y Tony Alvarez conocidos como Olga y Tony comenzaron sus carreras por separado, a una edad muy temprana. Olga Chorens comenzó a cantar a los 11 años de edad en programas infantiles de radio de la emisora García Serra. Mas tarde en el renglón infantil, Olguita compitió en La Corte Suprema del Arte, ganando numerosos certamenes hasta poder competir en entre los adultos, convirtiéndose en Estrellita Naciente.
Olga cuenta que a los 12 años escuchaba por la radio cubana el programa Ritmos del Plata, conducido por Tony Alvarez. El entonces modelo y locutor presentaba tangos durante la emisión, y hasta cantaba con las grabaciones al aire que llegaban del cono sur y eran el delirio de la época.
Ambos se conocieron cuando el destino los unió en el 1940 al formar parte de la Orquesta Rió De La Plata.
Olga y Tony se casaron el 6 de Mayo de 1945 y tres meses mas tarde, salieron de Cuba en una gira de 5 anos que los llevo por toda América Latina, desde Cuidad de Panamá hasta Buenos Aires.
Formaron parte de las compañías de teatro de la cantante española Estrellita Castro y la vedette cubana Blanquita Amaro. Fue durante esta gira que Olga y Tony fueron madurando su repertorio que incluía tangos, valses peruanos y numerosas composiciones del cancionero romántico y autóctono latinoamericano.
La gira culmino en Buenos Aires, donde Olga engalano importantes escenarios como el Tabaris y el Tronío, mientras Tony interpretaba ritmos cubanos como el ‘Galán de la Guaracha’. Olga aun recuerda la noche que la fue a ver su ídolo Libertad Lamarque, y pudo conocer a la estrella del tango y la pantalla grande a quien había admirado desde muy niña.
A su regreso a la Habana en 1950, Olga y Tony se convirtieron en un dúo, estelarizando Ronda Musical Coca Cola, un programa de radio en vivo que se transmitió por Radio Progreso de lunes a viernes de 6:30 PM a 7:00 PM durante más de 7 anos. Una vez a la semana los domingos realizaban Caravana Musical, un programa radial en vivo con la Orquesta Sinfónica conducida por el Maestro Enrique González Manticci.
Simultáneamente, en 1951, Olga y Tony se convirtieron en estrellas de la Televisora CMQ, conduciendo “El Show de Olga y Tony”; un programa diario en vivo reunían a 200 fanáticos que venían a ver a la pareja interpretar su variado repertorio, acompañados por una orquesta de verdaderas estrellas:
Israel López “Cachao” en el bajo, Rolando Laserie en los timbales, y Laito Castro en el piano, así como talentosisimos músicos que participaban en los coros, pasos de comedia y simpáticas producciones musicales.
La pareja ideal, un apodo que se ganaron por su talento, juventud, y exaltación de los valores familiares, una vez a la semana estelarizaba “A Las 10 con Olga y Tony”, un programa de televisión en horario estelar.
Olga Chorens y Tony Alvarez se retiraron de los escenarios cubanos con la llegada de Fidel Castro y el inicio de la Revolución Cubana. Salieron al exilio en 1963, hacia México, y al llegar a la ciudad de Miami en Estados Unidos, fueron contratados por empresarios de Nueva York. En la Babel de Hierro cantaron en importantes escenarios de la época: El Teatro San Juan, el Hotel Great Northern, el Alameda Room y el Liborio, donde se vieron obligados a incorporar canciones en ingles, complaciendo al publico local así como a sus fanáticos y a turistas latinoamericanos.
Su exitosa trayectoria en Cuba, y los numerosos admiradores que habían conquistado en República Dominicana y Puerto Rico hizo que el productor de televisión Paquito Cordero les ofreciera un contrato para el Canal 2 de Telemundo en Puerto Rico. En enero de 1965 debutaron en el Show de las Doce, un programa diario de hora y media dividido en segmentos compartidos con luminarias como El Gran Combo, Chucho Avellanet, y Luís Echegoyen y Eddie Miro. Olga y Tony repitieron en la isla del encanto, el éxito obtenido en su país natal: estelarizaban la última media hora promoviendo sus valores familiares entre las decenas de admiradores que llenaban el estudio diariamente de lunes a viernes.
Después de casi 15 años de éxitos en la pantalla chica de Puerto Rico, con sus programas en el Canal 7 y luego en el Canal 11 con Cita con Las Estrellas, Olga y Tony se trasladaron a España donde trabajaron en boites durante un año, regresando Miami, a realizar nuevamente sus emisiones de televisión en el Canal 51, Hit TV y Telemiami. Olga aun conserva su programa de radio, que inicio la pareja en 1989 y se transmite en Radio Mambi de Univision Radio los sábados de 5:00 PM a 6:00 PM. El Show de Olga y Tony se escucha a través del sitio de internet de Univision en el mundo entero.
