The subject of much interest is none other than Yasel Puig, who at 22 has the impressive record of being the player arrived from Cuba in recent decades with the greatest major league contract. El sujeto de tanto interés no es otro que Yasel Puig, quien a sus 22 años tiene el impresionante palmarés de ser el pelotero llegado de Cuba en las últimas décadas con el mayor contrato de Grandes Ligas. La franquicia de Los Angeles muestra evidente preocupación con su prospecto de $42 millones y no escatima esfuerzos para desarrollarlo al punto de verlo convertido en una estrella.
“Este ha sido mi primer campamento de primavera y de verdad no puedo quejarme’’, afirma Puig desde el complejo del club en Camelback Ranch. “Estoy tratando de hacer todo lo que me piden para demostrarles que soy un gran trabajador y ganarme una oportunidad. Sé que el chance de llegar a las Mayores en estos meses es algo todavía lejano. Ellos que decidan eso, lo mío es convencerles de que puedo hacerlo’’.
Al menos ya Puig se está ganando una reputación a la Stanton, pues como el jardinero de los Marlins, el cubano logra reunir a decenas de compañeros en sus prácticas de bateo donde suele sacar varias bolas del parque a distancias de miedo y varios evaluadores de talento, al ver su fisonomía de 215 libras y más de seis pies de estatura, lo confunden con un linebacker de la NFL.
Pero los Dodgers están conscientes de que Puig necesita pulir varios aspectos de su juego, especialmente en un swing largo que traen casi todos los peloteros nacidos en la isla, y con la nómina salarial más alta en la historia de las Grandes Ligas el equipo no está apurado en subir al muchacho a unas praderas donde sobresalen los nombres de Matt Kemp, Carl Crawford y Jerry Hairston Jr., entre otros.
“Aquí los Dodgers me han acogido de manera cálida y una figura como Kemp, que es una superestrella, se ha portado de manera excelente conmigo’’, agrega Puig. “Cada día aprendo algo nuevo sobre cómo funciona el sistema de Grandes Ligas, cómo ser más selectivo con los lanzamientos, tener un swing sin huecos, las rutas de fildeo. He llegado con humildad a esta escuela que se llama spring training’’.
En el caso de Puig, como para todos sus compatriotas, no se trata sólo de rellenar agujeros en la trayectoria de su bate sino de subir peldaños en el ascenso hacia una verdadera compresión de un modo de vida totalmente diferente al de su patria y no exento de tentaciones y cantos de sirena que pueden descarrilar la promesa de un pelotero de cualquier nacionalidad.
Aquí es donde entra la figura de Oropeza, un ex grandeliga antillano que fue contratado por los Dodgers para que fuese una especie de guía de Puig. El matancero no le pierde ni pie ni pisada al joven y trata de hacerle la transición lo más llevadera posible.
“Por experiencia propia sé lo difícil que es llegar a este país y sobrevivir en un ambiente nuevo’’, explica Oropeza, un lanzador que pasó por varias organizaciones. “Los Dodgers tienen mucha expectativa con Yasiel y mi objetivo es que el llegue a cumplir ese potencial que le vio el equipo cuando decidió otorgarle ese contrato. Creo que él está destinado para brillar. Ganas y deseos no le faltan’’.
Y el propio Puig reconoce que el contrato le pone cierta presión, pero él trata de que ese peso no se asiente demasiado en sus pensamientos.
“Más que un peso es un compromiso con los Dodgers, pero sobre todo con mi gente latina y cubana’’, reconoce Puig, quien jugaba con Cienfuegos en la Serie Nacional de la isla. “En Cuba me daba alegría que los cubanos triunfaran y me ponía contento con los logros de Aroldis Chapman, Alexei Ramírez…También quiero que algún día los fanáticos se sientan orgullosos de mí. Sólo espero mi tiempo. Con paciencia’’.
