The filmmaker Ian Padron launched on Tuesday the proposal to grant the National Film Award given annually to Cuban cultural authorities actor Reynaldo Miravalles, resident in Miami.
In an open letter distributed on the Internet, questioned Miravalles Padron, who turned 90 in January, has not received the highest distinction awarded by the Cuban filmmakers simply reside outside the island.

The National Film Award was instituted in 2003 to honor the career and the whole work of a filmmaker alive and living in Cuba. Since then comes every March, coinciding with the founding of ICAIC in 1959.
Miravalles is currently on a visit to Havana, where he traveled to attend the premiere of Esther somewhere, Gerardo Chijona presented in premiere on 20 February in the room Charles Chaplin. His presence there was met with a standing ovation packed hall, with the audience stood.
Cuban is the first film in which participates Miravalles after leaving Cuba in 1994. the actor will return to Miami on March 3.
“If we want a Cuba ‘With all and for the good of all’, let us honor those who are part of our culture Ceiba and Mother of all Cubans embrace well, wherever they live and think and think,” wrote Padrón.
Within hours, the proposal has received support from numerous Cuban artists inside and outside Cuba. From El Salvador, the filmmaker Jorge Dalton support the initiative.

I have personally seen Reynaldo Miravalles once and was a week ago against the ICAIC. I’m not your friend. Only belong to the millions of fans in Cuba and the world have enjoyed the work of this actor that round and 90 years of age.
Mention only three of the major characters played by Miravalles over a career spanning more than 50 years in the Cuban audiovisual: The unforgettable guajiro Melesio Capote with Heloise Alvarez Guedes, the macho bus driver in love with Vidal Consuelito swinging to Birds shotgun and his masterful Cheíto antagonist Sergio Leon … Corrieri in Maisinicú Man. These would be enough to proclaim that Miravalles is unquestionably a master essential when narrating the history of Cuban cinema.
Still, Reynaldo Miravalles not yet received the National Film Award each ship in March ICAIC.
In my view, the Cuban culture and its authorities face a historical dilemma:
Miravalles is in Cuba,
working with Cuba,
alive with 90 years … in Cuba,
and gave his life for Cuba Film …
and not reside in Cuba … is not eligible for the National Film Award …
That is ridiculous!
In recent years … not in Cuba but has always been tied to their nation and even these days in Havana premieres his latest film in Cuban cinema, directed by Gerardo Chijona.

UN PREMIO ‘CORAL’ PARA REYNALDO MIRAVALLES
El realizador Ian Padrón lanzó este martes la propuesta de otorgar el Premio Nacional de Cine que otorgan anualmente las autoridades culturales cubanas al actor Reynaldo Miravalles, residente en Miami.
En una carta abierta distribuida en la internet, Padrón se cuestionó que Miravalles, que cumplió 90 años el pasado enero, no haya recibido la máxima distinción otorgada a los cineastas cubanos por el simple hecho de residir fuera de la isla.
“Ante la historia y mi tiempo, dejo clara mi inconformidad con esta triste omisión y le pido al ICAIC [Instituto cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos] de Cine] y al jurado elegido que tengan en cuenta a Reynaldo Miravalles para la próxima votación del premio. Como cineasta cubano lo propongo en el cupo que supuestamente tengo cada año para escoger un candidato”, escribió Padrón, director del filme Habanastation.
El Premio Nacional de Cine fue instituido en el 2003 para homenajear la trayectoria y el conjunto de la obra de un creador cinematográfico vivo y residente en Cuba. Desde entonces se entrega cada marzo, coincidiendo con la fundación del ICAIC en 1959.
Miravalles se encuentra actualmente de visita en La Habana, adonde viajó para asistir al estreno de Esther en alguna parte, de Gerardo Chijona, presentado en premiere el pasado 20 de febrero en la sala Charles Chaplin. Su presencia en el lugar fue recibida con una ovación a sala repleta, con el público puesto de pie.
Es la primera película cubana en la que participa Miravalles tras su salida de Cuba en 1994. el actor regresará a Miami el próximo 3 de marzo.
“Si queremos una Cuba ‘Con todos y para el bien todos’, honremos a las personas que forman parte de la Ceiba Madre de nuestra cultura y abracemos a todos los cubanos de bien; vivan donde vivan y piensen como piensen”, escribió Padrón.
En pocas horas, la propuesta ha recibido ya respaldo de numerosos artistas cubanos de dentro y fuera de Cuba. Desde El Salvador, el realizador Jorge Dalton apoyo la iniciativa.

Reynaldo Miravalles se merece el Premio Nacional de Cine
(Carta abierta del cineasta Ian Padrón a la Cultura Cubana)
Personalmente he visto a Reynaldo Miravalles una sola vez y fue hace una semana frente al ICAIC. No soy su amigo. Solo pertenezco a los millones de admiradores que en Cuba y el mundo han disfrutado la obra de este actor que ronda ya los 90 años de edad.
Mencionaré solo tres de los grandes personajes interpretados por Miravalles a lo largo de una carrera de más de 50 años en el audiovisual cubano: El inolvidable guajiro Melesio Capote junto a Eloísa Álvarez Guedes, el guagüero machista enamorado de Consuelito Vidal en Los Pájaros tirándole a la escopeta y su magistral Cheíto León… antagonista de Sergio Corrieri en El hombre de Maisinicú. Bastarían estos para proclamar inobjetablemente que Miravalles es un maestro imprescindible a la hora de narrar la historia del Cine Cubano.
Aun así, Reynaldo Miravalles no ha recibido aún el PREMIO NACIONAL DE CINE que cada marzo entrega el ICAIC.
A mi juicio, La Cultura Cubana y sus autoridades tienen ante sí un dilema histórico:
Miravalles está en Cuba,
trabaja con Cuba,
está vivo con 90 años… en Cuba,
y ha dado su vida por el Cine de Cuba…
y por no residir en Cuba… no es elegible para EL PREMIO NACIONAL DE CINE…
¡Eso es ridículo!
Desde hace unos años no reside en Cuba… pero siempre ha estado ligado a su nación e incluso por estos días estrena en La Habana su más reciente filme en el cine cubano, dirigido por Gerardo Chijona.
Ante la historia y mi tiempo, dejo clara mi inconformidad con esta triste omisión y le pido al ICAIC y al jurado elegido que tengan en cuenta a Reynaldo Miravalles para la próxima votación del premio. Como cineasta cubano lo propongo en el cupo que supuestamente tengo cada año para escoger un candidato.
Si queremos una Cuba “Con todos y para el bien todos”, honremos a las personas que forman parte de la Ceiba Madre de nuestra cultura y abracemos a todos los cubanos de bien; vivan donde vivan y piensen como piensen.
Insto además a todos los actores, escritores y artistas a batallar juntos por romper el arcaico precepto de medir la estatura moral de un cubano por su lugar de residencia en el mundo.
Miravalles quizás no piense en estos detalles y no creo los halagos sean su prioridad en la vida, pero el público cubano y el ICAIC le debemos respeto a este gran artista. Hoy -y no mañana-, démosle a Miravalles el estímulo de nuestra ética, nuestro agradecimiento y nuestro aplauso eterno.

Yo también me uno a la justa petición de Ian Padrón y al mismo tiempo propongo, que algún día no muy lejano, un certamen nacional de poesía pueda llevar el nombre de Heberto Padilla u otros encuentros literarios se llamen Guillermo Cabrera Infante o Reynaldo Arenas. Hacer monumentos a Celia Cruz o Chano Pozo. Que la Cinemateca de Cuba lleve el nombre de Enrique Díaz Quesada, el pionero del Cine Cubano y de la misma forma, construir un Rincón de la Fama, un sitio grandioso, alegre, que sea un símbolo para los encuentros de aquí y de allá, más grande y más importante que el Comité Central del Partido Comunista, pero muchísimo más grande, señores!!!, donde estén: Guillermo Portabales, La Lupe, Tres Patines, Los Hermanos Rigual, Anibal de Mar, Paquito D’Rivera, Patato Valdez y miles y miles de cubanos y cubanas que fueron, son y serán parte de la Cultura Nacional y de la patria. Y para que nunca más se le ocurra a alguien por muy poderoso que sea, en los años y siglos que se avecinan, volver a desterrar sus cuerpos, talentos y sus nombres de la faz de Cuba.
