LECCIONES DE HISTORIA: EL OTRO 17 DE ABRIL

Una tarde en North Hollywod, a principios de 1969, recibí una llamada telefónica. Respondo y del otro lado alguien me dice: “¿Eres tu Serapio?”…

Sentí alegría y sobresalto. Solamente tres personas en el mundo me llamaban “Serapio”: Carlos Zárraga, Jorge Riopedre y el Capitán del Escambray Vicente Méndez Fernández.

El “gordo” Carlos, debido a que vivía en San Marcos, California y leía mis escritos, ya me llamaba “Esteban”… Y como Carlos estuvo en la boda de mi hija Ana Julia con Frank Navarro se hizo amigo de muchos güineros y aprendió a llamarme “Estebita”… Zárraga era miembro de una ilustre familia de villareños que eran dueños del Central Adela, y se había convertido en famoso cuando el periodista Drew Pearson se refirió a él en su columna sindicada -con 60 millones de lectores- diciendo: “Él más peligroso enemigo del castrismo en Miami se llama Carlos Zárraga quien tiene un parecido físico extraordinario con el comediante Jackie Gleason”…

Entonces no era Zárraga quien me interpelaba, tampoco era Riopedre porque mi compadre Jorge me hablaba a menudo y ya había desechado por completo ese “nombre de guerra”, por lo tanto alegre contesté con una pregunta de una sola palabra: “¿Guajiro?”…Una risa del lado de allá y un: “Increíble que después de tantos años sin vernos me reconozcas la voz”…

EL “GUAJIRO” VICENTE MENDEZ

Le dije: “No, chico lo que pasa es que solamente tu me llamas Serapio”… Y me respondió: “Bueno, tengo que confesarte que no solamente te llamo ‘Serapio’ sino que fui quien te puso ese apodo”…

“¿Dónde estás?” le pregunté, sabiendo que Vicente había prometido ante el Consejo de Veteranos de la Guerra de Independencia que “Iba a desembarcar en Cuba con las armas en sus manos junto a un aguerrido grupo de miembros de Alpha 66”…

Dijo: “Estoy en la carretera, creo que estamos en Texas, paramos en un gasolinera y te llamo de un teléfono público porque voy para Los Ángeles con Andrés Nazario Sargen, con el Comandante Victor “Diego” Paneque y con José Rodríguez Pacheco, creo este último tu no lo conoces” … Le dije “Perfecto, llámame de nuevo cuando llegues”. Y me dijo: “Sí, ya sé que nos veremos pero necesito un favor tuyo”. Le dije: “Lo que sea guajiro ¿en qué te puedo servir?”…

“¿Tu sabes que prometí que voy a desembarcar en Cuba?”… “Sí, y eso no me sorprendió en lo absoluto”… “Exacto, pero el problema que tengo es que después del fracaso de Manolo Ray -tu y yo conocemos bien esa etapa- y varios paquetes que muchos descarados han metido prometiendo la guerra y más tarde no hacen nada HAY ALGUNA GENTE QUE NO CREE QUE YO VOY A CUMPLIR CON MI PALABRA”…

Y le dije: “Sí, Vicente, yo perfectamente sé que tú si vas a desembarcar y vas a pelear en Cuba, porque esa siempre ha sido tu obsesión en la vida”… Se emocionó y me dijo: “Bueno, tu me conoces bien, tu sabes que cuando la expedición del Barco Venus no me rajé en ningún momento, y ese es precisamente el favor que requiero de ti, dicen que los cubanos te respetan allá en California, por lo tanto necesito que garantices públicamente que estoy diciendo la verdad”…

ESTEBAN FERNANDEZ Y VICENTE MENDEZ

Nos reunimos en la casa de Mariano Sedó en Pasadena. Allí también por primera vez conocí a Yoel Borges y a Miguel Talleda, dos incansables luchadores de la causa. Al verme Vicente salió disparado rumbo a mí, yo abrí los brazos para saludarlo efusivamente, pero frenó, me miró fijamente y me dijo: “¿Esta es tu mujer? Espérate, chico, que yo prefiero abrazarla a ella primero”…

Después que al fin me abrazó le dije: “No cambias guajiro” Y me dijo riéndose: “De ahora en lo adelante me llamas ‘Capitán’ y pronto Nazario me va a nombrar Coronel”… Y le dije: “Perfecto, entonces no me llames ‘Serapio’, yo soy “el escritor Esteban Fernández”… Y a dúo sonamos tremenda risotada.

Acto seguido dediqué muchos días y discursos en reuniones públicas a prometer el inminente desembarco del guajiro. Y ya todo el mundo sabe que el 17 de Abril del año 1970 cumplió con su palabra. Y pasó a ser uno de los más bravos mártires que ha dado la Isla de Cuba. Dios lo tiene en la Gloria y sus compatriotas anticastristas debemos sentir enorme admiración por él.
