Seven members of the National Ballet of Cuba left the company during a trip to Mexico to seek refuge in the United States, reported CaféFuerte site.
Six of them crossed the Mexican border from Texas and are in Miami since last Friday, after seeking political asylum to U.S. authorities.
“It’s the hardest decision I’ve made in my life, but do not think about the past, but in the future,” said the dancer Annie Ruiz Diaz, 24. “We were determined to find a better life artistic and economic well for our families.”
Besides Ruiz, came to Miami Ariadnni Martin, 20, Randy Crespo, 22, Victor Luis Santana, 23, Edward Gonzalez, 23, and Joseph Justiz, 20.
A seventh member of the group, Alejandro Mendez, 20, remains in Mexico.
“The time at which one decides to escape, even though the family left behind and you never know when you will see them again,” said Crespo. “We wanted to run away together, because we think we can help each other in this time to start a new life.”
The delegation of the National Ballet of Cuba traveled to Mexico last March 17. Their presentations were made between 20 and 24 March in Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Chetumal, in the state of Quintana Roo.

Seis se encuentran en Miami, tras cruzar la frontera por Texas, y uno permanece en territorio mexicano.
Siete integrantes del Ballet Nacional de Cuba abandonaron la compañía durante una gira por México para buscar refugio en Estados Unidos, informó el sitio CaféFuerte.
Seis de ellos cruzaron la frontera mexicana por Texas y se encuentran en Miami desde el pasado viernes, tras solicitar asilo político a las autoridades estadounidenses.
“Es la decisión más difícil que he tomado en la vida, pero no pensamos en el pasado, sino en el futuro”, declaró la bailarina Annie Ruiz Díaz, de 24 años. “Estábamos decididos a buscar una mejor vida artística y bienestar económico para nuestras familias”.
Además de Ruiz, llegaron a Miami Ariadnni Martín, de 20 años; Randy Crespo, de 22; Luis Víctor Santana, de 23; Edward González, de 23; y José Justiz, de 20.
Un séptimo miembro del grupo, Alejandro Méndez, de 20, permanece aún en territorio mexicano.
“Llegó el momento en que uno se decide a escapar, a pesar de que deja atrás la familia y uno no sabe cuándo va a volver a verlos”, comentó Crespo. “Quisimos escapar juntos, porque pensamos que podemos ayudarnos entre todos en este momento de comenzar una nueva vida”.
La delegación del Ballet Nacional de Cuba viajó a México el pasado 17 de marzo. Sus presentaciones se realizaron entre el 20 y el 24 de marzo en Cancún, Playa del Carmen y Chetumal, en el estado de Quintana Roo.
