But after negotiations and protest of Equality Forum, the Department of the State reverse gear and authorized her trip to Philadelphia.

Mariela Castro travelled to the United States to attend as invited to activities scheduled at the United Nations headquarters.

La sexóloga y diputada Mariela Castro no tuvo una jornada del todo placentera este sábado durante la cena de premiaciones de la organización Equality Forum en Filadelfia.

Uno de los homenajeados de la velada, el ex congresista Barney Frank, dijo que admira el trabajo de la directora del Centro Nacional de Educación Sexual de Cuba (CENESEX) en la defensa de los derechos de los homosexuales y lesbianas, pero discrepa de ella en tanto forma parte del sistema represivo impuesto por Fidel y Raúl Castro en la isla.

“Aplaudo a Mariela Castro por su labor para expandir los derechos civiles de la coimunidad LGBT, pero difiero profundamente de ella si respalda la represión política a cargo de su padre y su tío “[en Cuba]”, manifestó el congresista a los presentes en el Museo Nacional de la Historia Judía Americana.

Frank, quien recibió anoche el Premio Internacional al Modelo de Conducta de Equiality Forum, no vaciló en calificar a Fidel y Raúl Castro “entre los grandes traidores del liberalismo y los derechos humanos”, según reportó el diario Philadelphia Inquirer.

“Me alegro de que esté disminuyendo la represión de los homosexuales y lesbianas, pero desde luego no creo que la gente deba decir, OK, bueno, eso es todo lo que uno tiene que hacer'”, manifestó Frank, una prominente figura del Partido Demócrata y reconocido activista de la comunidad gay en Estados Unidos.

Frank sirvió por 32 años como representante federal por el estado de Massachussets hasta que decidió retirarse el pasado año.

De acuerdo con el reportero Chis Palmer, Mariela Castro evitó la discusión política el sábado, y sólo se salió de su plataforma de apoyo a los gay y lesbianas cuando un miembro de la audiencia le preguntó si esperaba cambios inmediatos en las relaciones de Estados Unidos y Cuba.

“Tenemos que cambiar el mundo juntos”, respondió brevemente en su única frase en inglés de la jornada.

Mariela Castro fue premiada con el Premio de Aliada Internacional por los Derechos de la Comunidad LGBT, concedido por Equality Forum.

La sexóloga está de visita en Filadelfia desde el pasado viernes, cuando recorrió la ciudad y visitó sitios históricos como la Campana de la Libertad. El sábado participó también en un panel dedicado a la situación de los derechos sexuales y civiles en Cuba, patrocinado por Equality Forum en la Universidad de las Artes.

Su comparecencia en Filadelfia estuvo precedida inicialmente por la negativa del Departamento de Estado a concederle permiso para asistir al evento de Equality Forum. Siguiendo el reglamento que se aplica a funcionarios cubanos que visitan Estados Unidos, la visa concedida se restringía al área de Nueva York.

Pero luego de gestiones y protesta de Equality Forum, el Departamento de Estado dio marcha atrás y autorizó su viaje a Filadelfia.

Mariela Castro viajó a Estados Unidos para asistir como invitada a actividades programadas en la sede de Naciones Unidas.
