The director Yosmani Acosta received the award for best director in feature film category, while Omar Franco was recognized as Best Supporting Actor, announced the event during the closing day.

“This is the highest award of my career and be memorable, because I did it with my first film and competing with top level managers and dedicated path,” he said in an interview last night with CaféFuerte. “It’s exciting for me and the entire cast that made it possible.”

Made entirely in the city of Camagüey, last year, the film also received nominations in the categories of best foreign film, acting principal and original story. Competed in the festival short, animated and feature films from 35 countries.

Acosta said he is confident that this recognition promotes the commercial release of Paul in Cuba. The film has only been seen by Cuban spectators at the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema of Havana, where he was scheduled out of competition last December, and during a special presentation to the public Camagüey.

The New York Film Festival was held from 13 to 20 June and the awards were announced last Friday. The short film The Island of cork, by Cuban Carlos Betancourt, a resident of Los Angeles, also participated in the sample.

Little One (South Africa), won the award for best foreign film, and the sale of Paradise (Spain) won for best original story.

Violence, sex and drugs

Pablo tells the story of a 12-year-old Javier Diaz starring Varona, who is subjected to cruel abuse by his father at home. The film includes scenes of bloody violence in emerging issues also unusual presence in Cuban cinema as child abuse, prostitution and drug use.

“Pablo is a topic surrounded by taboos and fears in Cuban society, is the first time this issue reaches a Cuban film,” said the director. “Child abuse is happening, sometimes without realizing it, next to our homes, and I think that Cubans are insufficiently aware of a phenomenon, which has high sensitivity and impact in Cuba today.”

Acosta, 34, is widely satisfied also by the possibility of advancing in a film project that has attracted interest from producers in the United States, but declined to provide details on the history of film.

The film was shown and at the International Festival of West Palm Beach and in a special role in the film Tower of Little Havana, sponsored by Miami-Dade College.

Acosta is in the United States since last April and has no date yet for his return to Cuba. His film has exhibitions scheduled in Tampa and Chicago.

PELICULA CUBANA sobre abuso infantil premiado en Festival de New York

“Pablo”, un desgarrador filme sobre la violencia familiar en Cuba, se alzó con sendos premios de mejor dirección y actuación en el IV Festival Internacional de Cine de Nueva York.

El realizador Yosmani Acosta recibió el galardón como mejor director en la categoría de largometraje de ficción, mientras que Omar Franco fue reconocido como Mejor Actor Secundario, anunció el evento durante la jornada de clausura.

“Este es el premio más importante de mi carrera y será inolvidable, porque lo logré con mi primera película y compitiendo junto a directores de altísimo nivel y trayectoria consagrada”, dijo anoche Acosta en entrevista con CaféFuerte. “Es muy emocionante para mí y para todo el elenco que lo hizo posible”.

Realizada íntegramente en la ciudad de Camagüey, el pasado año, la película recibió además nominaciones en las categorías de mejor película extranjera, actuación principal e historia original. En el festival compitieron cortos, animados y largometrajes de 35 países.

Acosta dijo que confía en que este reconocimiento favorezca el estreno comercial de Pablo en Cuba. La película sólo ha sido vista por espectadores cubanos en el Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano de La Habana, donde se programó fuera de concurso el pasado diciembre, y durante una presentación especial para el público camagüeyano.

El Festival de Nueva York se realizó del 13 al 20 de junio, y los premios fueron anunciados el pasado viernes. El cortometraje La isla del corcho, del realizador cubano Carlos Betancourt, residente en Los Angeles, también participó en la muestra.

Little One (Sudáfrica), conquistó el premio de mejor película extranjera, y La venta del Paraíso (España) triunfó como mejor historia original.

Violencia, sexo y drogas

Pablo narra la historia de un niño de 12 años, protagonizado por Javier Díaz Varona, quien es sometido a crueles abusos a manos de su padre en el hogar. La cinta incluye escenas de cruenta violencia en las que emergen también temas de inusual presencia en el cine cubano como el maltrato infantil, la prostitución y el uso de drogas.

“Pablo trata un tema rodeado de tabúes y temores en la sociedad cubana; es la primera vez que este asunto llega a una película cubana”, comentó el director. “El abuso infantil está sucediendo, a veces sin darnos cuenta, al lado de nuestras casas, y creo que los cubanos no tienen suficiente conciencia de un fenómeno, que es de alta sensibilidad e impacto en Cuba hoy”.

Acosta, de 34 años, está ampliamente satisfecho también por la posibilidad de avanzar en un proyecto cinematográfico que ha despertado el interés de productores en Estados Unidos, aunque declinó ofrecer detalles sobre la historia del filme.

La película fue presentada ya en el Festival Internacional de West Palm Beach y en una función especial en el Cine Tower de La Pequeña Habana, patrocinado por el Miami-Dade College.

Acosta se encuentra en Estados Unidos desde el pasado abril y no tiene aún fecha para su regreso a Cuba. Su película tiene programadas exhibiciones en Tampa y Chicago.
