Among the honorees are former President Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey television presenter, former baseball player and Hall of Famer Ernie Banks, the editor during Watergate, Ben Bradlee, and Nobel prize winner in Economics, Daniel Kahneman.
Other honorees include former Republican Senator Richard Lugar, the country singer Loretta Lynn, former college basketball coach Dean Smith, writer Gloria Steinem, the civil rights activist Vivian Cordy Tindell and Judge Patricia Wald.
The list includes three winners post mortem Hawaiian Senator Daniel Inouye, the first American astronaut in space, Sally Ride, and civil rights activist Bayard Rustin.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is for “men and women who have dedicated their lives to improving those of others.’s Honorees this year have been blessed with extraordinary talent, but what sets them apart is their willingness to share that talent with the world” , President Barack Obama said in a statement.
Mario Molina, who emigrated to the U.S. to pursue graduate studies and received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, currently teaches at the University of California at San Diego, directs the Mario Molina Center for Energy and the Environment, and a member of the Presidential Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.
Meanwhile, Arturo Sandoval has won nine Grammy Awards and has achieved wide recognition as a trumpeter, pianist and composer.
The Medal of Freedom, created 50 years ago by President John F. Kennedy is the highest decoration awarded by the U.S. government civilians exceptionally contribute to U.S. national security or interests, to world peace, or other significant public or private projects.
The award will be imposed at the White House in late 2013.

El jazzista cubano Arturo Sandoval y el químico mexicano Mario Molina integran el grupo de 16 personas que recibirán este año la Medalla Presidencial de la Libertad por sus contribuciones excepcionales, anunció la Casa Blanca, según AP.
Entre los homenajeados se encuentran el expresidente estadounidense Bill Clinton, la presentadora televisiva Oprah Winfrey, el ex beisbolista y miembro del Salón de la Fama Ernie Banks, el jefe de redacción durante el escándalo del Watergate, Ben Bradlee, y el ganador de un premio Nobel en Economía, Daniel Kahneman.
Otros homenajeados serán el ex senador republicano Richard Lugar, la cantante de música country Loretta Lynn, el ex entrenador de baloncesto universitario Dean Smith, la escritora Gloria Steinem, el activista por los derechos civiles Cordy Tindell Vivian y la magistrada Patricia Wald.
La lista incluye tres premiados post mortem: el senador hawaiano Daniel Inouye, la primera astronauta estadounidense en viajar al espacio, Sally Ride, y el activista por derechos civiles Bayard Rustin.
La Medalla Presidencial de la Libertad es para “hombres y mujeres que han dedicado sus vidas a mejorar las de otros. Los homenajeados este año han sido bendecidos con talento extraordinario, pero lo que los diferencia es su disposición a compartir ese talento con el mundo”, dijo el presidente Barack Obama en un comunicado.
Mario Molina, quien emigró a Estados Unidos para cursar estudios de postgrado y obtuvo el Premio Nobel de Química, actualmente dicta clases en la Universidad de California en San Diego, dirige el Centro Mario Molina para la Energía y el Ambiente, e integra el Consejo Presidencial de Asesores sobre Ciencia y Tecnología.
Por su parte, Arturo Sandoval ha obtenido nueve premios Grammy y ha alcanzado gran reconocimiento como trompetista, pianista y compositor.
La Medalla de la Libertad, creada hace exactamente 50 años por el entonces presidente John F. Kennedy, es la máxima condecoración que otorga el gobierno estadounidense a civiles que contribuyan de manera excepcional a la seguridad o intereses nacionales estadounidenses, a la paz mundial, o a otros proyectos importantes públicos o privados.
La condecoración será impuesta en la Casa Blanca a fines de 2013.
