Panama’s foreign minister, Fernando Nuñez Fabrega, indicated that the procedures have been arranged so expeditiously, because of “the nature of the case and the danger of people”.
Nuñez Fabrega said that “Panama has a long history of protecting political refugees and people who are in danger”, so that the grant of asylum was made as the request is received.
However, the foreign minister emphatically denied that the grant has to do with stopping the North Korean vessel Chong Chon Gang, from Cuba, whose 35 crew await the response to the writ of habeas corpus filed before the Supreme Court for his arrest.
The asylum application was approved on Saturday. Starting Monday formalities will be carried out in Panama to receive and place them in a shelter, according to the Foreign Ministry specified.
This occurs in the context of protests that top exiles in Miami against the “use of torture and abuses” against undocumented Cubans detained in Bahamas.

PANAMÁ CONCEDE ASILO A 19 CUBANOS DETENIDOS EN BAHAMA.
Panamá ha concedido asilo político a 19 cubanos que abandonaron la Isla y llegaron a las costas de las Bahamas, informaron medios locales.
El canciller de Panamá, Fernando Núñez Fábrega, señaló que los trámites se han arreglado de forma tan expedita, debido a “la naturaleza del caso y el peligro de las personas”.
Núñez Fábrega agregó que “Panamá tiene una larga trayectoria de proteger a perseguidos políticos y a personas que se encuentren en peligro”, por lo que la concesión del asilo se realizó en cuanto se recibió la petición.
Sin embargo, el canciller negó enfáticamente que la concesión tenga relación alguna con la detención del buque norcoreano Chong Chon Gang, procedente de Cuba, cuyos 35 tripulantes aguardan la respuesta al recurso de Habeas Corpus interpuesto ante la Corte Suprema de Justicia por su detención preventiva.
La solicitud de asilo se aprobó el sábado. A partir del lunes se realizarán los trámites para recibirlos en Panamá y ubicarlos en un albergue, según especificó la Cancillería.
Este hecho se produce en el marco de las protestas que encabezan exiliados en Miami contra las “prácticas de tortura y atropellos” contra cubanos indocumentados detenidos en Bahamas.
