Representation is more rooted villager . Therefore, Camagüey is well known throughout Cuba as the “city of the potteries”. The Camagüeyano tinajón pottery has a background in Andalusia,Spain. It was the solution that potters from southern Spain, early settled in Port-exchanged water in storage containers used before to store grain, wine, oil and other liquids.
Although the jars were produced massively in the Camagüey region from the seventeenth century are not unique to it. Were also made elsewhere in Cuba : Trinidad and Sancti Spiritus , West Indies, Jamaica , and even in South America : Chile and Peru , where he picked up the pottery tradition of the Inca civilization .

CAMAGUEY: LA CIUDAD DE LOS TINAJONES
Si ha visitado a la bella ciudad de Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe, Camagüey sabrá que el tinajón es el símbolo camagüeyano por antonomasia. Constituye la representación lugareña más enraizada. Por ello, a Camagüey se le conoce en toda Cuba como la “ciudad de los tinajones”. El tinajón Camagüeyano tiene antecedentes en la vasija andaluza. Fue la solución con la que alfareros procedentes del sur de España, asentados tempranamente en Puerto Príncipe, trocaron en almacenes de agua los recipientes antes empleados para guardar granos, vinos, aceites y otros líquidos.
Aunque los tinajones se elaboraron masivamente en la región Agramontina a partir del siglo XVII, no son privativos de ella. Se hicieron también en otros lugares de Cuba: Trinidad y Sancti Spíritus, las Antillas, Jamaica e, inclusive, en la América del Sur: Chile y Perú, donde se recogió la tradición alfarera de la civilización incaica.
Del barro rojo de la Sierra de Cubitas comenzaron a fabricarse los tinajones desde los años del 1600, según noticias, a pesar de que no hay hoy día ningún tinajón inscrito con fecha tan remota. La más antigua data de 1760. Su producción tuvo el mayor auge en las décadas centrales del siglo XIX. A partir de 1868, con el inicio de las contiendas independentistas, quedó casi cancelada. Se restableció sólo entre 1878 y 1895, para luego cesar por completo. Todo hogar del Camagüey tenía al menos un tinajón.
El agua contenida dentro las frescas paredes era empleada para beber y cocinar, y se hizo brindis acostumbrado a las visitas de propios y extraños. Y muchos de estos terminaban casándose aquí… Por ello antaño y aún hoy suele decirse, en noviazgos y bodas semejantes al galán: ¡Ese tomó agua de tinajón!
En 1900 existían en la ciudad más de 16 mil tinajones. Hoy apenas quedan unos 2 500 de los originales. De uno a otro siglo los tinajones fueron variando la forma.
En esencia siempre quedó un modelo clásico que ha llegado hasta nuestros días. El típico tinajón camagüeyano es aquel de voluminosa panza, líneas geométricas delimitadas y cresta destacada, o amigdaloide.
Distintas anécdotas lo sitúan como escondite propicio para don juanes pueblerinos sorprendidos en pleno romance, en terreno ajeno…
Se dice que en 1875 un soldado mambí visitaba a su hijo enfermo en la ciudad, cerca de la histórica Plaza de San Juan de Dios. Fue delatado y pudo salvarse de ser capturado por los guardias civiles españoles que lo buscaban, escondiéndose dentro de un voluminoso tinajón.
La imaginación de decenas de artesanos jugueteó con el blando barro en disímiles inscripciones y motivos ornamentales. El torno siguió girando generación tras generación. Los maestros alfareros sentaron las bases de la actual cerámica camagüeyana.
En los típicos patios del Camagüey, transpirando humedad de siglos, entre arecas, flores y helechos, todavía vigilan el tiempo los grandes y ventrudos tinajones.
