Cuando los Medias Rojas de Boston derrotaron a los Tigres de Detroit, cinco carreras por dos, para convertirse en el rival de los San Luis Cardenales en la Serie Mundial de las Grandes Ligas, me invadió un sentimiento de fastidio: ningún pelotero formado en Cuba estará presente en el clásico beisbolero de octubre.
El jardinero Jon Jay, nativo de Miami, es el único pelotero de raíces cubanas que participa en la Serie Mundial de 2013.
No importó que José “Candelita” Iglesias, el short stop habanero del Detroit pegara dos hits en el sexto partido –a la postre decisivo–, y que a sus dotes defensivas sumara un average de 357 en esta fase, con cinco hits en 14 turnos. Junto con Iglesias, otro jugador de la isla, el cátcher Brayan Peña, contempló (en su caso desde el banco) como el grand slam de Shane Victorino le concedía a Boston el boleto a la final que arranca este miércoles en el Fenway Park, donde mismo los Medias Rojas festejaron días atrás su título de la Liga Americana. El otro de los Tigres con raíces cubanas, el receptor Alex Avila, es nativo de Hialeah y formado en el béisbol estadounidense.
Antes Boston aniquiló tres juegos por uno al Tampa Bay, el equipo que entregó toda su confianza a otro short stop de Cuba, Yunel Escobar, el exbeisbolista de Industriales en las Series Nacionales de la Isla. Detroit, por su parte, dispuso en cinco programas del Oakland, el elenco que contó por segundo año con los servicios de Yoenis Céspedes, sorprendente ganador del Derby de Jonrones en el Juego de las Estrellas.
De estirpe santiaguera
En el Viejo Circuito, San Luis arruinó primero a los Piratas, tres pleitos por uno, y a continuación ganó en seis juegos el banderín de la Liga, dejando en la carretera a Dodgers de Los Ángeles. La buena estrella del gran Orestes Miñoso los estará guiando en su nueva casa beisbolera en Chicago.
