Chucho , one of contemporary jazz luminaries , unexpectedly announced Thursday that it will not be at the festival , according to an interview released by EFE . Not specified the reasons for its decision not to travel to Havana .

The 29th edition of the International Jazz Plaza Festival 2013 will open its curtains on 19 December. La próxima edición del Festival Internacional Jazz Plaza de La Habana dedicará un homenaje póstumo al célebre pianista Bebo Valdés (1918-2013), pero su hijo el pianista y compositor Chucho Valdés, quien también formaba parte del tributo, no asistirá al evento.
Chucho, una de las luminarias del jazz contemporáneo, anunció sorpresivamente este jueves que no estará en el festival, según una entrevista difundida por la agencia EFE. No se precisaron los motivos de su decisión de no viajar a La Habana.
“Luché mucho para que la música de mi padre no estuviese prohibida”, afirmó el pianista, de 71 años, en conversación con el periodista Víctor Usón.
La 29 edición del Festival Internacional Jazz Plaza 2013 abrirá sus cortinas el próximo 19 de diciembre. El programa del evento tenía previsto que Chucho Valdés y su grupo The Afro-Cuban Messengers abrieran la gala inaugural. La publicidad para los paquetes y giras turísticas del festival estaban enfocados en la presencia de Chucho y el homenaje a ambos músicos.
Bebo Valdés, una gloria musical de Cuba, abandonó Cuba en 1960 inconforme con el rumbo de la revolución de Fidel Castro y nunca más regresó a su patria. Su nombre y su música fueron borrados por la cultura oficial durante décadas.
“Fue frustrante que la música de Bebo se prohibiese en Cuba”, declaró el artista, que calificó de inolvidables los últimos años que pasó junto a su padre en Benalmádena, en la ciudad española Málaga.
.. Justamente el disco que promociona Chucho por estos días, Border-Free (Sin Fronteras), contiene temas vinculados al músico fallecido, entre ellos el titulado “Bebo”, en el que se acerca al estilo de componer y tocar de su progenitor, una de las figuras fundacionales en la época de oro de la música cubana, en la década de los 50.
Además del tema de homenaje a su padre, el álbum incluye sendos números “familiares”, dedicados a su abuela y otro a su madre: “Pilar”, con un toque de Bach, y “Blue in Green”, de Miles Davis.
Border-Free -según Chucho- “rompe barreras, abre camino y elimina las fronteras” entre géneros musicales tan diversos como el jazz, el flamenco, ritmos de Marruecos, los rituales orishas o la música de Bach.
El pasado agosto, de paso por Miami, Chucho declaró que quiere reunir a los fundadores de la banda Irakere en un concierto que sería un gesto de unidad y una afirmación de que la música está por encima de cualquier barrera.
“Yo pienso que eso sería bueno para todo el mundo, una especie de encuentro, de unión”, dijo el fundador de la legendaria agrupación en una entrevista con CaféFuerte.
