Fui al reencuentro con el estelar ex lanzador Luis Tiant como quien va a una cita de nostalgias con su pasado. Pero descubrí que las memorias pueden retoñar y fructificar en el presente cuando el protagonista es un hombre como Tiant, interesado y fraterno con sus compatriotas de hoy.
Fue la segunda vez que la vida me depara compartir de cerca con Tiant, una de las glorias latinoamericanas de Grandes Ligas y el lanzador cubano con más victorias en las Mayores, con récord de 229-172 en 18 años de duro bregar.
LUIS TIANT Y ALBERTO AGUILA
Tiant se apareció en el Juego de las Estrellas cubanas, efectuado en el parque Bucky Dent en Hialeah. Compartió con el recién llegado José Dariel Abreu, firmado por los Medias Blancas de Chicago, y elogió a Yasiel Puig, que sorprendió con su presencia a los asistentes al partido amistoso. En medio de la alegría de los aficionados y de infinidad de periodistas, pude conversar brevemente con él, 54 años después de nuestra primera charla en una Habana que ya es puro recuerdo.
Tiant hizo el primer lanzamiento del juego frente a “Pito” Abreu y estuvo todo el tiempo rodeado de admiradores, que le removieron en la cabeza las estampas pasadas de su paso por Grandes Ligas.
Asombrosa recuperación
“Me he quedado sin palabras, yo no pensé que la gente me recordara tanto por acá”, confesó.
Le pregunté de su asombrosa recuperación después de lesionarse seriamente el brazo de lanzar en 1969. “Trabajé muy fuerte, me preparé mucho, corrí demasiado y poco a poco volví a ser yo”, me respondió.
En su campaña de novato en 1964, a los 23 años, el tirador nativo de Marianao obtuvo 10 éxitos y cuatro reveses hasta completar 66 triunfos en cinco contiendas, pero en 1969, su brazo derecho le falló estrepitosmente y bajó a nueve victorias y 20 derrotas.
En 1970, reapareció con el uniforme de los Mellizos de Minnesota y trabajó solo 92 innings con 7-3. Fue cambiado al Atlanta y luego a Ligas Menores. Un año después llegó a los Medias Rojas de Boston, donde tuvo una desastrosa temporada, con una sola victoria y siete reveses en 71 episodios.
En la pelota venezolana
Muchos no saben que “El Tiante” jugó 10 años en Venezuela. Cuando finalizaba en a temprada de Grandes Ligas, enseguida caía por los terrenos venezolanos. En 1963 militó en el Valencia, después en el Caracas durante cinco años y tres veces con la Guaira. En total ganó allí 37 y perdió 24, con un fenomenal 2.27 de efectividad.
Por eso, sus consejos como asesor de pitcheo de los Medias Rojas de Boston se salgan un poco de la tendencia protectora de brazos que hoy está en boga. No podría ser de otra manera para un hombre que tiró 3,486,1 entradas en su carrera.
“Lanzar y lanzar, los brazos jóvenes se fortalecen cuanto más tires”, dijo “El Bigotudo”, que cumplirá 74 anos el próximo 23 de noviembre.

I went to the reunion with former star pitcher Luis Tiant like going on a date with her past nostalgia . But I discovered that memories can I sprout and bear fruit in the present when the protagonist is a man like Tiant , interested and brotherly with his countrymen today .
It was the second time that life throws at me share closely Tiant , one of the glories of Latin American and Cuban major league pitcher with the most wins in the majors, with a record of 229-172 in 18 years of hard struggle .
