El presidente del Comité de Salud, Educación, Trabajo y Pensiones del Senado estadounidense, el demócrata Tom Harkin, acaba de realizar una visita de una semana a la Isla y ha regresado a su país alabando el sistema de salud cubano.
Cuba es un “país pobre, pero tienen una tasa de mortalidad infantil más baja que la nuestra”, dijo el demócrata de Iowa a la prensa, el miércoles, informó el National Journal. “Su esperanza de vida es ahora mayor que la nuestra. Es interesante, su sistema de salud pública es bastante notable”, añadió.
No está claro qué hospitales visitó Harkin en la Isla, donde la población muestra cada vez mayor malestar por el deterioro de las instalaciones sanitarias, la falta de profesionales por la venta de servicios médicos al exterior y la escasez cíclica de medicamentos.
El reporte tampoco indicó qué funcionarios del régimen, que vigila con celo la información sobre su sistema de salud y utiliza métodos propios para medir indicadores como la tasa de mortalidad infantil, “atendieron” a Harkin.
El senador hizo un recorrido de tres días y se mostró además impresionado por lo que describió como bajas tasas de infección en los hospitales y la supuesta reducción del tabaquismo que, dijo, se debe a campañas de salud pública.
Harkin ya estuvo en Cuba en 2003 y entonces llamó a la liberación de los 75 disidentes condenados a largas penas de cárcel en la primavera de ese año.

The chairman of the Health, Education , Labor and Pensions , U.S. Senate , Democrat Tom Harkin, has just completed a week-long visit to the island and has returned home praising the Cuban health system .
Cuba is a ” poor country, but they have an infant mortality rate lower than ours,” said the Iowa Democrat told reporters on Wednesday , the National Journal reported . ” Their life expectancy is now greater than ours. Interestingly , the public health system is quite remarkable ,” he added .
It is unclear what Harkin visited hospitals on the island, where the population shows increasing unease about the deteriorating health facilities , lack of professionals from the sale of medical services abroad and the cyclical shortages of medicines .
The report also indicated which regime officials , who watches jealously information about their health system and uses proprietary methods to measure indicators such as infant mortality , ” they attended ” a Harkin .
The senator toured three days and was also impressed by what he described as low rates of infection in hospitals and alleged that reducing smoking , he said, is due to public health campaigns .
Harkin was already in Cuba in 2003 and then called for the release of 75 dissidents sentenced to long prison terms in the spring of that year.
