Melba Hernández Rodríguez del Rey, una de las mujeres más cercanas a Fidel Castro, murió este domingo en La Habana, informó el Comité Central del Partido Comunista en una nota publicada por el diario oficial Granma.
La exguerrillera de la Sierra Maestra y posterior defensora de la dictadura castrista falleció por “complicaciones asociadas a la diabetes mellitus, enfermedad que padeció durante muchos años”.
A pesar de sus 93 años, era miembro del Comité Central del PCC y diputada a la Asamblea Nacional del Poder Popular.
Melba Hernández nació en Cruces, antigua provincia de Las Villas, el 28 de julio de 1921. Se graduó de abogada en la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad de La Habana en 1943.
Participó en la lucha contra la dictadura de Fulgencio Batista y fue condenada a prisión por participar en el asalto al Cuartel Moncada, el 26 de julio de 1953.
Según la versión de la historia que cuenta el Gobierno, fue testigo de la tortura y asesinato de sus compañeros y, tras salir de prisión, ayudó a sacar clandestinamente de la cárcel en la que se encontraba Fidel Castro el manuscrito de La Historia me absolverá.
Además, integró la primera Dirección Nacional del Movimiento 26 de julio y se trasladó a México. Regresó a la Isla para incorporarse al Tercer Frente, Mario Muñoz Monroy, dirigido por Juan Almeida Bosque, durante las luchas en la Sierra Maestra.
Tras el triunfo de la Revolución fue presidenta del Comité Cubano de Solidaridad con Vietnam del Sur primero, y después de Vietnam, Cambodia y Laos; miembro del Presidium del Consejo Mundial de la Paz; secretaria general de la Organización de Solidaridad con los Pueblos de Asia, África y América Latina (OSPAAAL); embajadora de Cuba en Vietnam y en Kampuchea, y directora del Centro de Estudios sobre Asia y Oceanía.
Fue fundadora del PCC y miembro de su Comité Central desde el Tercer Congreso, así como diputada a la Asamblea Nacional desde 1976 hasta 1986, y elegida nuevamente desde 1993.
Recibió los títulos honoríficos de Heroína del Trabajo y Heroína de la República de Cuba.
Atendiendo a su voluntad, su cadáver será cremado y sus cenizas custodiadas transitoriamente en el Ministerio de las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias hasta que sean trasladadas al cementerio de Santa Ifigenia para ser depositadas junto a los restos de otros asaltantes del Moncada, indicó el Comité Central.

Dies at 93 Melba Hernández , exguerrillera and symbol of the regime
Melba Hernández Rodríguez del Rey, one of the closest to Fidel Castro women, died Sunday in Havana, reported the Central Committee of the Communist Party in an article published by the official newspaper Granma .
The exguerrillera of the Sierra Maestra and later defender of the Castro dictatorship died of ” complications associated with diabetes mellitus , a disease suffered for many years.”

Melba Hernández was born in Cruces, former province of Las Villas, on July 28, 1921 . He graduated as a lawyer at the Law Faculty of the University of Havana in 1943.
Participated in the struggle against the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista and was sentenced to prison for participating in the assault on the Moncada Barracks on July 26, 1953 .
