CELIA CRUZ: primera latina en el “Paseo de las Leyendas” del famoso Teatro Apollo de New York.
La Reina de la Salsa, Celia Cruz, será la primera latina exaltada al Paseo de las Leyendas del Teatro Apollo de Nueva York, durante un concierto el sábado en el que se rendirá tributo a su vida y legado, como parte del 80 aniversario de esa sala de espectáculos, informa EFE.
De esa forma, la “Guarachera de Cuba”, que falleció el 16 de julio de 2003, se unirá a otras estrellas como Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, Etta James y Quincy Jones, quienes han recibido ese reconocimiento. Muchos de ellos formaron parte de las famosas “Amateur Nights” del teatro, que aún continúan.
LA GUARACHERA DE CUBA, CELIA CRUZ
“La siguen honrando después de muerta. Es uno de los reconocimientos más importantes que se le han dado desde que falleció. El Apollo es un teatro importante, y en el centro de la comunidad afroamericana”, dijo a EFE Omer Pardillo, ejecutor del patrimonio de Celia Cruz, y quien fuera su representante.
“Celia fue primera en muchas cosas”, dijo complacido en cuanto a que sea la primera latina en recibir esta distinción, “y qué bueno porque mantiene vivo el legado de la cultura latina, y más en la ciudad de Nueva York”, añadió
Pardillo y Elia Knight, hija del fenecido músico Pedro Knight, esposo de Cruz, aceptarán el reconocimiento durante el evento, en el que además se otorgará una beca a un estudiante de la escuela de Música Celia Cruz en el condado de Bronx.
Un grupo de artistas, entre ellos la cubana Lucrecia, como invitada, subirán al escenario del Apollo, en el corazón del vecindario de Harlem, para hacer un recorrido por las cuatro etapas de la carrera de Cruz: con la Sonora Matancera, Tito Puente, las Estrellas de Fania y en solitario, a través de los temas que la Reina de la Salsa hizo famosos.
CELIA CRUZ EN AFRICA (1974)
En el concierto, organizado por el Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute para el legendario Apollo, inaugurado en 1913 y que en sus inicios solo recibía espectadores blancos, se escucharán “Químbara”, “Cúcala”, “Guantanamera” y “La negra tiene tumbao”, entre otros.
“El que se le rinda honor a Celia es merecido, algo que tiene por derecho, es la reina indiscutible y cada vez que le tengo que cantar, me llena de mucha ilusión y emoción”, dijo a EFE Lucrecia durante un ensayo para el concierto.
Aseguró que la cantante cubana, que hizo de “¡Azúcar!” su grito de guerra en los escenarios, ha impactado su vida desde que comenzó su carrera con el grupo Anacaona, ya que Celia Cruz también fue parte de esa orquesta.
“Cuando empecé a cantar en México la primera canción que escuché de Celia, que estaba prohibida en Cuba, fue la “Danza del Cucuyé”, y me emocioné muchísimo. Después la fui conociendo poco a poco, una gran profesional, una gran mujer, se dio a todo el mundo”, recordó.
“A mi me ha tocado en todos los terrenos. Personalmente, muchísimo porque era humilde, muy sencilla y teníamos una conexión preciosa. Para mí es como si fuera mi segunda madre”.
LUCRECIA DE CUBA
Lucrecia, radicada en España desde 1993, será la encargada de cerrar el espectáculo con “Canto a La Habana”, “Yo viviré”, “La negra tiene tumbao”, para luego, todos los artistas, interpretar “Químbara”, de la que dice “es la rumba perfecta”.
Otros cantantes que rendirán tributo a la Guarachera serán José Alberto (El canario) con su orquesta, Cita Rodríguez y Anissa Gathers —una de las cantantes que dio vida a Celia Cruz en el musical Off Broadway que se hizo de su vida—, en un concierto que comenzará con un toque de tambores Batá.
“Celia le cantó mucho a los santos. Tuvo unos tres discos dedicados a las canciones Yorubas con la Sonora Matancera. Así le rendimos homenaje a esa parte de su vida”, dijo Marta Moreno Vega, directora del Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute.
El Apollo, declarado en 1983 monumento histórico de la Gran Manzana e icono de la cultura de Estados Unidos, fue comprado en 1932 por el empresario Sidney Cohen.
En ese momento abrió sus puertas a los afroamericanos con un espectáculo de jazz y desde entonces ha recibido a todos los grupos étnicos que componen Nueva York.
