Para Octavio, oriundo de Santiago de Cuba y quien hace seis años reside ilegalmente en La Habana, su misión principal es darle de comer a la familia. Después, lo demás.
“Mi hijo mayor y yo hacemos de todo. Lo mismo pedaleamos 12 horas un bicitaxi, vendemos viandas, recolectamos latas vacías, chapeamos patios que recogemos dinero para un banco de ‘bici2bolita’ [lotería clandestina]”, cuenta.
Pero ni así Octavio puede garantizar dos comidas diarias. “La segura es una por la noche. Dos semanas al mes podemos cenar cuatro platos: arroz blanco, frijoles negros, carne de puerco o pollo, aguacate o ensalada de tomate, col y pepino. El resto del mes, congrí, huevo frito o tortilla y yuca o boniato hervido.imagesCAQ04PWMEl almuerzo suele ser un pan con croqueta y, a veces, una pizza. Si alguien se enferma, se le prepara sopa o caldosa. El desayuno para todos es sólo café”, confiesa.
Octavio, su mujer y sus tres hijos, en dos días levantaron una chabola con paredes de tablas y techo de aluminio, en uno de los más de 40 barrios-miseria que rodean la capital.
En “favelas”, donde se vive como animales. La gente defeca en la vegetación y las chozas no tienen agua potable. De manera ilegal, las familias se conectan a redes eléctricas aledañas. Además del insoportable hedor por un basurero cercano y de inmensas ratas, el sitio es una bomba de relojería: en cualquier momento estallan enfermedades contagiosas y mortales como el cólera.
Sin la “libreta” de racionamiento. Casi todos los habitantes quemaron sus naves. Vendieron lo poco que tenían para invertir su futuro en La Habana.
“La mayoría ya no tenemos casas en nuestras provincias de origen. Al estar por la izquierda, no tenemos libreta [cartilla de racionamiento], por lo que debemos forrajear la comida”, dice Silvio, quien hace un par de años vive en el insalubre lugar.
Los vecinos de estos arrabales siempre tienen hambre. Hablar de comida es un hobby. Se come tan poco y tan mal y se bebe tanto ron infame, que si llegas a los 65 años eres un afortunado.
Se cierran los caminos
En los barrios-miseria las notas lúgubres forman parte de la cotidianeidad. El suicidio es una buena manera de escapar. La solución cuando todos los caminos se te cierran.
Octavio recuerda que un paisano suyo se ahorcó el año pasado. Sus recuerdos son estremecedores: “A otro se lo llevó el cólera, aunque en el acta de defunción dijeron que murió por insuficiencia respiratoria. Había un muchacho serio, poco hablador, que pensó que triunfar en La Habana era cosa de coser y cantar. Una noche se quitó la vida acostándose en la vía del tren. Es duro vivir como gitanos y no todos lo soportan”.
Cuando consiguen un poco dinero, primero garantizan la “jama” y el resto se evapora en botellas de ron de cuarta categoría y fiestas que duran hasta que se acabe la plata. “No hay más ná. Esto [el país] no lo arregla ni el médico chino. Aquí debemos vivir el día a día”, subraya Silvio.
Garantizar la comida
Por estos lares apenas se habla de política. Y cuando lo hacen, no se ponen de acuerdo como si su mala suerte fuera culpa de su incapacidad.
Para afrontar la vida o la ineficiencia del Gobierno. La Habana con luces, paladares de lujo, precios alucinantes en la venta de autos o comercialización de internet, no es algo que les interese.
Para ellos, un tipo de éxito es el que garantiza comida caliente para su familia una vez al día. O los fines de semana compran una botella de ron y la comparte con los vecinos. “Y sobre todo, ser buen socio. En estos barrios somos solidarios. Tenemos tan poco que no nos importa amanecer sin un centavo al día siguiente”, dice Octavio.
¿Y el futuro?, les pregunto. Octavio mira a Silvio como buscando apoyo: “Nagüe, eso es cosa de gente que tiene casa, trabajo fijo o una cuenta en el banco. El futuro no se come”.

Octavio remembers a fellow countryman who hanged himself last year.
