Canadá sigue siendo el principal emisor de turistas a Cuba, pero el número de viajeros procedentes de Estados Unidos se ha incrementado constantemente en los últimos siete años.
Unos 173.550 personas viajaron del territorio estadounidense a Cuba entre enero y marzo. Eso se compara con 149.515 ingleses, 115.984 alemanes y 96.640 franceses en todo 2013.
“Los datos confirman que, aunque el Gobierno cubano no lo reconozca públicamente, Estados Unidos, incluso con el efecto del embargo, es la segunda principal fuente de turistas hacia Cuba después de Canadá”, dijo en un reporte Emilio Morales, presidente del grupo consultor.
“El aumento en el primer trimestre ha sido enorme”, agregó.
La mayoría de los viajeros son cubanoestadounidenses que visitan a sus familiares, pero también están aquellos sin lazos en la Isla y que participan en programas culturales y académicos autorizados por el Gobierno de Barack Obama.
En 2009, el mandatario eliminó un límite impuesto por su antecesor, George W. Bush, que permitía a los cubanoestadounidenses viajar a la Isla solo una vez cada tres años para visitar a familiares. Y en 2011, reinstauró los viajes personales, aquellos que permiten a los ciudadanos solicitar un permiso para participar en actividades que a juicio de Washington propicien el contacto con cubanos de a pie.
La Habana es el principal destino para la mayoría de los viajeros, seguido por Santa Clara y Camagüey. La gran mayoría viaja en avión desde el Aeropuerto Internacional de Miami. En lo que va del año han salido más de 1.000 vuelos de Miami a Cuba, y otros 109 desde Tampa, también en Florida, de acuerdo con el reporte.
Hubo más viajes desde Estados Unidos en los primeros tres meses de 2014 que en el último trimestre de 2013, cuando muchos cubanoamericanos fueron a la Isla a pasar las festividades con su familia.
Los viajes desde Estados Unidos se ha incrementado constantemente cada año, de unos 245.000 en 2007 a casi 600.000 el año pasado.
“Esperamos que 2014 será un año récord”, escribió Morales.
En promedio, los viajeros cubanoestadounidenses gastan 3.238 dólares por persona durante su visita, un importante recurso económico para el Gobierno de Raúl Castro.
