DEPORTES: LARA Y BARTHELEMY: HACIA LA FAMA Y FORTUNA.
La historia pudiera comenzar a sonreirle en grande a los boxeadores cubanos en el exilio.
Los pugilistas Erislandy Lara, en la categoría superwelter (154 libras), y Rances Barthelemy, de los pesos superplumas (130 lbs), podrían ser los primeros cubanos en obtener combates de primer nivel y excelentes ganancias en la historia del boxeo profesional cubano en el siglo XXI.
A partir de mediados de la década de los 90, cuando numerosos peleadores abandonaron la isla para buscar fortuna en Estados Unidos y Europa, ninguno llegó a ser una figura de máximo rango. Aunque Diosbelys Hurtado y Joel Casamayor alcanzaron títulos, no tuvieron después defensas exitosas de sus pergaminos, ni lograron bolsas que les permitieran vivir de lo conquistado con sus puños.
Lara, de 31 años, y Barthelemy, de 27, tienen sus respectivos mánagers, pero ambos están apadrinados ahora por el todopodero Al Haymon, nuevo zar del boxeo y para muchos, tan poderoso o más a la hora de negociar contratos, boxeadores y peleas que sus antecesores Tex Rickard, Don King y Bob Arum.
Haymon, estudió Economía en Harvard, fue exitoso empresario de cantantes y artistas como Whitney Houston y Eddy Murphy, y posteriormente ha sido apoderado exitoso de más de 30 pugilistas a quienes ha conseguido llevarles a pleitos de resonancia y sumas de dinero considerables.
Lara irá a un fuerte pleito el 12 de julio con Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, en la categoría de las 154 libras. El Canelo, como le nombran, no es tan canelo como dicen ni tan bueno como creen sus simpatizantes, pero su mentor, José “Chepo” Reynosa, se mueve bien en el mundo pugilístico, lo que explica la concertación de este pleito después de que el mexicano cayera con facilidad ante Floyd Mayweather Jr, quien es realmente el mejor de los hombres que comanda Haymon.
En cuanto a Barthelemy, estará en la revancha con el campeón de los superplumas Argenis Méndez después de un recordado primer pleito entre ambos, concluido cuando el cubano noqueó a su oponente, pero instantes después de sonar la campana que daba término al segundo round. Una reclamación de los dirigentes del dominicano permitió conseguir un resultado de combate “sin decisión” por las autoridades de Minnesota, que revisaron el video. De ahí que la Federación Internacional de Boxeo -entidad que auspició el tope- devolviera el cinturón a Méndez.
Para ambos Lara y Barthelemy, sus próximos enfrentamientos son fundamentales y, sin dudas, los más importantes en sus carreras respectivas. Si triunfan y dejan una grata impresión, podrán estar en carteleras de primer nivel a partir de ahora. Y deben aprovechar esta etapa dorada en que los boxeadores que más dinero reciben por sus actuaciones son los que están entre los pesos entre 130 y 160 libras.

Y en el caso de Guillermo Rigondeaux, ya sabemos que su depurada técnica, peleando a distancia, con golpes aislados pero sin la sensación de espectacularidad que hoy exige el caótico mundo pugilístico, es su principal escollo. Curioso caso de un boxeador dominante cuyo estilo no encaja en los moldes de lo que quieren ver sobre el ring los que pagan por el boleto o reservan el espacio de televisión.
Lara y Barthelemy deben aprovechar este momento de sus carreras y salir en cada pleito a golpear y vencer convincentemente a sus rivales. De lo contrario, el señor Haymon, buscará los sustitutos correspondientes.
