El cubano Roenis Elías, un lanzador zurdo de los Marineros de Seattle que es casi desconocido para la afición de la isla, entró sin ruido alguno a las Grandes Ligas y durante el mes de junio se ha consolidado como uno de los mejores novatos de la temporada.
Elías, que cumplirá 26 años el próximo agosto, se ha ganado un puesto de abridor que no tenía seguro al iniciarse el campeonato. Incluso iba a ser enviado a las Menores a finales de marzo, pero las lesiones de James Paxton y Taijan Walker, y la ausencia de abridores en el mercado de agentes libres, inclinaron la decisión de la directiva de Seattle a darle una oportunidad al novel zurdo cubano. No hay que olvidar que el efecto Puig ha puesto a los cubanitos de moda en Grandes Ligas y ha rendido más de una pluma a la hora de firmar jugosos contratos.

Desde que debutó en la Gran Carpa, el pasado 3 de abril, ha lanzado en 13 partidos como abridor, con balance de 5-4 y un promedio de efectividad de 3.64, con 70 ponches en 81.2 innings trabajados.
Pero la favorable evolución de Elías se está haciendo notar en la medida que avanza la temporada.
LOS TIGRES EN UN PUÑO.
En su salida inicial de junio se convirtió en el primer tirador de los Marineros en completar un juego durante la actual campaña, tras blanquear por 4×0 a los Tigres de Detroit, el equipo de más alto promedio ofensivo de la Liga Americana.

Muchos cubanos no podrán dejar de asombrarse ante los resultados de Roenis, convertido el un abridor dominante en Ligas Mayores. Al menos quienes lo vieron actuar hace un par de años con el equipo de Guantánamo. Fue un desastre. Ganó siete y perdió 10, y su promedio de efectividad quedó como uno de los más alto de todos los tiempos en Series Nacionales: ¡7.57 en 94 entradas! Además otorgó 81 bases por bolas! y le batearon para 307.
PRONÓSTICO HECHO AÑICOS.
Curioso es que algunos avezados entrenadores y scouts llegaron a sentenciar que nunca llegaría a la pelota grande.
En el 2010, el muchacho escapó con mil peripecias a México y fue puesto a prueba en una Clase B, donde le dijeron que nunca tendría oportunidad de escalar a Grandes Ligas. Pero Elías confiaba demasiado en sus posiblidades y no se dejó aplastar por los pronósticos en su contra.
Así fue que insistió y fue a un segundo tryout abierto, a cargo de scouts norteamericanos, pero tampoco gustó. No se amilanó y en un tercer intento llamó la atención de un cazatalentos del Seattle y fue firmado por la franquicia el 3 de mayo del 2011.
Entre 2011 y 2013 Elías estuvo en tres equipos de Ligas Menores, donde aumentó su velocidad, mejoró el control, aprendió a tirar el cambio de velocidad y a superar numerosos escollos que le ocurrieron dentro y fuera el terreno.
Sería una novedad tener a otro cubano lidiando por el título de Novato del Año por segunda temporada consecutiva, luego de que José Fernández, de los Marlins de Miami, se alzara con el galardón en la contienda del 2013.
