CUBANOAMERICANO ELEGIDO PRESIDENTE DE LA CORTE SUPREMA DE LA FLORIDA.
La Corte Suprema de Florida juramentó el miércoles por la tarde como su presidente al juez Jorge Labarga, quien se convirtió en el primer cubanoamericano que ocupa esa responsabilidad, reporta la AP.
Labarga fue elegido en enero para un período de dos años que comienza este martes.
Los presentes en la juramentación, en una sala abarrotada, incluían al presidente de la Cámara de Representantes de la Florida, Will Weatherford; al presidente del Senado, Don Gaetz; al Jefe de Finanzas, Jeff Atwater; al vicegobernador Carlos López-Cantera y a seis exmagistrados de la Corte Suprema.
“Cuando niño, observé el sueño de mis padres de una democracia estilo estadounidense mientras su país se convertía en una pesadilla marxista”, dijo Labarga. “Es absolutamente imperativo que continuemos esforzándonos en ser un país y un estado de inclusión, no de exclusión”.
Labarga nació en Cuba en 1952 y llegó a Pahokee, Florida, cuando tenía 11 años. Fue nombrado magistrado de la Corte Suprema de Florida en 2009. Sustituye como presidente a Ricky Polston, quien se mantendrá trabajando como juez.
Los miembros de la Corte Suprema eligen al presidente. La responsabilidad se rota cada dos años. La elección de Labarga siguió una tradición de escoger al próximo magistrado más antiguo que no hubiera estado en el cargo.
A la juramentación asistieron las dos hijas de Labarga. Su esposa, Zulma, sostuvo la Biblia mientras Polston le tomaba juramento.
Labarga destinó una parte de su discurso a abogar por una mayor representación legal de los que no pueden pagarla.
“Para que funcione una democracia, el concepto de justicia debe estar disponible… a todos los ciudadanos”, dijo.
Labarga reside en West Palm Beach. Sirvió como juez de un tribunal de sentencia y luego brevemente como juez de apelaciones antes de ser nombrado a la Corte Suprema del estado.
“El magistrado jefe Labarga es el primer cubanoamericano en convertirse en presidente, pero también es el primero de ascendencia hispana”, dijo el exmagistrado de la Corte Suprema Raoul Cantero. “Este es un momento de mucho orgullo para todos los hispanos”.

CUBAN AMERICAN ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE SUPREME COURT OF FLORIDA.
The Florida Supreme Court sworn in Wednesday afternoon as its president Judge Jorge Labarga, who became the first Cuban-American to occupy that responsibility, reports the AP.
Labarga was elected in January for a period of two years beginning on Tuesday.
Those present at the swearing in a crowded room, including the president of the House of Representatives of Florida, Will Weatherford; Senate President Don Gaetz; Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater; Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera and six exmagistrados Supreme Court.
“As a child, I watched my parents dream of an American-style democracy as their country became a Marxist nightmare,” said Labarga. “It is absolutely imperative that we continue to strive to be a country and a state of inclusion, not exclusion.”
Labarga was born in Cuba in 1952 and came to Pahokee, Florida, at age 11. He was appointed judge of the Supreme Court of Florida in 2009. Replaces president Ricky Polston, who will remain working as a judge.
The members of the Supreme Court choose the president. The responsibility is rotated every two years. Choosing Labarga continued a tradition of choosing the next oldest magistrate who had not been in office.
The inauguration was attended by two daughters Labarga. His wife, Zulma, held the Bible as he took oath Polston.
Labarga used part of his speech to advocate for greater legal representation of those who can not afford it.
“For me to run a democracy, the concept of justice should be available to all citizens …” he said.
Labarga resides in West Palm Beach. He served as a judge of a court judgment and then briefly as appellate judge before being appointed to the state Supreme Court.
“The chief magistrate Labarga is the first Cuban American to become president, but also the first Hispanic descent,” said Supreme Court ex magistrado Raoul Cantero. “This is a very proud moment for all Hispanics.”
