El Gobierno de México ha anunciado que liberará a los catorce inmigrantes cubanos que fueron rescatados a principios de mes frente a las costas de la Península de Yucatán y les concederá la residencia legal en el país, en una inusual decisión después de que Cuba rechazara su repatriación, tal y como ha confirmado este lunes un funcionario de migración.
De las 32 personas a bordo de la embarcación, quince murieron en el mar. Los demás lograron sobrevivir bebiendo agua de lluvia y tuvieron que tirar los cadáveres por la borda. Dos de los inmigrantes rescatados murieron más tarde en un hospital en México, mientras que otro fue liberado y se encuentra en Estados Unidos, según han confirmado sus familiares.
En su odisea por llegar a Estados Unidos, los cubanos partieron a principios de agosto desde Manzanillo, un pueblo en el este de Cuba, en una embarcación casera que a los dos días de travesía sufrió la avería de su motor. Quedó a la deriva durante tres semanas hasta que un barco de la Marina mexicano la divisó.
México había dicho que deportaría a los catorce supervivientes restantes de vuelta a Cuba bajo un acuerdo de repatriación firmado hace casi cuatro años. Pero el Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM) ha dicho este lunes que los cubanos se quedarán en el país por cuestiones humanitarias.
“Cuba no reconoce a sus ciudadanos como tal, por lo que México les dará un mes para regularizar su estancia”, ha explicado a Reuters una portavoz del departamento de migración del México que pidió no revelar su nombre, ya que la decisión debe ser anunciada formalmente por la Cancillería.
“Por humanidad no los podemos tener retenidos en el centro de inmigración”, ha apostillado. La decisión del Gobierno mexicano se conoce poco más de una semana después de que el canciller José Antonio Meade visitara Cuba para fortalecer los lazos bilaterales.
Cada año miles de cubanos intentan llegar a Estados Unidos con precarias embarcaciones desafiando aguas infestadas de tiburones en el Caribe. A veces desembarcan en Centroamérica para alcanzar la frontera estadounidense por tierra cruzando México y otras son desviados por corrientes hacia aguas mexicanas.
Las autoridades estadounidenses indican que en los últimos once meses 16.200 cubanos han llegado sin visado a la frontera con México, la mayor cifra en una década.
