CARDENAS, CUBA – The Municipal Court of Cardenas in Matanzas province condemned to five youths who installed an extensive Wi-Fi network to provide Internet service to the residents of their locality. The youths were denounced by Cuba Radio Company and the government, that control regular Internet Services in the island, they were accused of illegal economic activity, an offense under Article 228.1 of the Criminal Code.
Conviction for the crime they are accused could be between three months and one year in prison, in spite that the prosecution was unable to prove that “none of the servers were stolen, or had entered the country illegally,” but even so all were convicted.
The five young men has been in prison for the last five months while awaiting trial after being arrested in a spectacular police operation.

El Tribunal Municipal de Cárdenas en la provincia de Matanzas condeno a cinco jóvenes que instalaron una extensa red wi-fi para brindar servicio a los vecinos de su localidad. Los jóvenes fueron denunciados por la Empresa Radio Cuba y el gobierno los acuso de actividad económica ilícita, delito tipificado en el Artículo 228.1 del Código Penal.
La condena por el delito que se les acusa podría ser de entre 3 meses y un año de prisión, la fiscalía fue incapaz de demostrar que “ninguno de los servidores era robado, ni había entrado al país ilegalmente” pero así todo fueron hallados culpables.
Los cinco jóvenes ya llevan 5 meses en prisión mientras esperaban el juicio después de su arresto en un aparatoso operativo policial.
