TONY OLIVA, GLORIA DEL BÉISBOL CUBANO VISITA A CUBA.
El ex estelar pelotero Tony Oliva, una de las glorias cubanas en Grandes Ligas, fue exaltado como un ídolo del béisbol nacional durante un reciente visita a su natal Consolación del Sur, en Pinar del Río.
Durante una entrevista con el veterano comentarista deportivo Julio Duarte Alonso, de Radio Guamá, Oliva fue presentado como “un ejemplo de la calidad del pelotero cubano” y -según el entrevistador- es una figura que el pueblo de Cuba quiere y admira.
“Tony Oliva le pertenece a la Isla, la pertenece a Pinar del Río, le pertenece a Consolación del Sur, y nos llena de orgullo que esté aquí”, dijo el periodista, que también lo consideró como “uno de los peloteros más extraordinarios que ha visto el beisbol mundial”.
La entrevista salió al aire por Radio Guamá y fue colgada el pasado 20 de noviembre en el sitio de internet TeVeo, un servicio de audio y video que incluye los reportes del Noticiero Nacional de Televisión y la radio cubana.
Aunque Oliva, de 76 años, ha visitado con regularidad a sus familiares en la isla, es la primera vez que su nombre y sus hazañas son resaltados en los medios oficiales.
La visita de Oliva se produjo días después de que las autoridades deportivas cubanas anunciaran la refundación del Salón de la Fama del Béisbol Cubano, congelado desde 1960, e incluyeran entre los nuevos miembros a Orestes Miñoso y Camilo Pascual, quienes abandonaron la isla para poder continuar su carrera en Grandes Ligas.
Oliva no jugó en la pelota profesional cubana, pero salió de Cuba en 1961 y se radicó en Estados Unidos.
Justamente Oliva y sus compatriotas Miñoso y Luis Tiant se encuentran entre los 10 candidatos al Salón de la Fama de Grandes Ligas por selección del Comité de Veteranos, que tomará la decisión los días 7 y 8 de diciembre en San Diego.
En una carrera de 15 años, Oliva bateó para 304 con 220 jonrones, 947 carreras impulsadas, 870 anotadas, 1,917 hits, 329 dobletes, 48 triples y 86 bases robadas. Fue electo al Juego de las Estrellas en sus primeras ocho temporadas en Grandes Ligas, sobrepasando el récord de seis consecutivos en poder de Joe DiMaggio. Fue Novato del Año en 1964 y su tradicional número 6 quedó retirado por los Mellizos de Minnesota en 1991.

TONY OLIVA, CUBA’S FAMOUS BASEBALL PLAYER VISIT CUBA.
The former star baseball player Tony Oliva, one of the Cuban glories in the majors, was inducted as an idol of the national baseball during a recent visit to his native Consolacion del Sur, Pinar del Río.
During an interview with veteran sports commentator Julio Duarte Alonso, Radio Guama, Oliva was presented as “an example of the quality of Cuban baseball player” and according to the interviewer is a figure that the people of Cuba loves and admires.
“Tony Oliva belongs to the island, part of Pinar del Río, belongs to Consolacion del Sur, and we are proud to be here,” said the journalist, who also saw it as “one of the most extraordinary players who has seen the baseball world. ”
The interview aired on Radio Guama and was hanged on 20 November at the website Teveo, a service of audio and video including reports of National Television News and the Cuban radio.
Although Oliva, 76, has regularly visited relatives on the island, it is the first time his name and his deeds are highlighted in the official media.
Oliva’s visit came days after Cuban sports authorities announced the re-founding of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum Cubano, frozen since 1960, and included among the new members and Camilo Pascual Miñoso Orestes, who left the island to continue his career in the majors.
Oliva did not play in the Cuban professional baseball, but left Cuba in 1961 and settled in the United States.
Just Oliva and his compatriots Miñoso and Luis Tiant are among the 10 candidates for the Hall of Fame MLB for selection of the Veterans Committee, which will decide on 7 and 8 December in San Diego.
In a career spanning 15 years, Oliva hit 304 220 homers, 947 RBIs, 870 runs, 1,917 hits, 329 doubles, 48 triples and 86 stolen bases. He was elected to the All-Star Game in his first eight seasons in the majors, surpassing the record of six consecutive held by Joe DiMaggio. He was Rookie of the Year in 1964 and its traditional Number 6 it was removed by the Minnesota Twins in 1991.
