“UN NUEVO AMANECER”.

A las 7 de la mañana de este 18 de diciembre el Sol aparece en el horizonte en los 120 grados en dirección al Este. El humo de la refinería y las caprichosas nubes terminan por confeccionar ese kitsch de la naturaleza que es el amanecer. Todo parece igual sobre la Isla, pero un invisible rayo de esperanza se abre para los cubanos a partir de ahora.
Hoy es el primer día de un proceso de sanación, o pudiera serlo, para no pecar de optimismo excesivo. A partir de ahora, de forma casi imperceptible, el antiguo diferendo entre Cuba y Estados Unidos modifica su carácter; empezará a modularse el lenguaje y la primera palabra en desaparecer será ‘enemigo’, que podría sustituirse por ‘vecino’, que ni siquiera es un término cariñoso, pero que al menos no destila tanto odio.
Si el vaso está medio vacío o medio lleno es una especulación estéril que nunca tendrán los sedientos en medio del desierto. Ya leímos y revisamos los discursos, ya nos sorprendieron las sorpresas y nos defraudaron las ausencias. Hoy es un nuevo día, no en el calendario, sino en la Historia y estamos obligados a reconocerlo a menos que estemos dispuestos a hacer el ridículo de enarbolar una agenda anacrónica.

De aquí a abril, cuando se produzca la cumbre de Panamá, el Gobierno cubano estará siendo observado por el mundo entero. Habrá muchos ojos atentos y muchos partidarios de la confrontación esperando, aunque sea una breve detención, el impedimento a acudir a una reunión, la más mínima señal que sirva para demostrar que Raúl Castro no merecía semejante voto de confianza. Ellos lo saben y tendrán que elegir entre aflojar la represión o quedar mal.
Yo apuesto a que van a quedar mal, pero estoy deseoso de perder la apuesta. Todas las señales y la experiencia acumulada dicen a las claras que se trata de una nueva maniobra para ganar tiempo y que se van a salir con la suya, pero es también una jugada inédita y las cosas siempre pueden salir de otra manera. Lo mejor es que se le ha dado agua al dominó y es el momento de tomar las fichas.

“A NEW DAWN”.

At 7 am on December 18 the sun on the horizon at 120 degrees eastward. The smoke from the refinery and whimsical clouds eventually make the kitsch of nature that is the dawn. Everything looks the same on the island, but an invisible beam of hope opens for Cubans from now.
Today is the first day of a healing process, or could be, not sin of excessive optimism. As of now, almost imperceptibly, the old dispute between Cuba and the United States changes its character; will begin to modulate the language and the first word will disappear ‘enemy’, which could be replaced by ‘neighbor’, which is not even a term of endearment, but at least not distilled so much hate.
If the glass is half empty or half full is a sterile speculation will never thirsty in the desert. We already read and reviewed the speeches, and we were surprised surprises and we disappoint absences. Today is a new day, not on the calendar but in history and we are obliged to recognize unless we are willing to make a fool to fly an anachronistic agenda.

By April, when the Panama summit occurs, the Cuban government is being watched by the whole world. There will be many watchful eyes and many supporters of confrontation waiting, even a brief detention, the impediment to attend a meeting, the slightest sign that serves to demonstrate that Raul Castro did not deserve such a vote of confidence. They know it and have to choose between ease repression or look bad.
I bet it will look bad, but I’m willing to lose the bet. All signs and accumulated experience say clearly that this is a new maneuver to gain time and to be away with it, but also an unprecedented move and things can always go otherwise. It is best that has been given water dominoes and it’s time to take the chips.
