The team of Pinar del Río to represent Cuba at the upcoming Caribbean Series was reinforced with the leading figures of national baseball for the purpose of claiming Cuban participation after the fiasco of last year.

El equipo de Pinar del Río que representará a Cuba en la venidera Serie del Caribe fue reforzado con las principales figuras del béisbol nacional con el propósito de reivindicar la participación cubana tras el fiasco del pasado año.
El conjunto Vegueros fue anunciado este viernes en una rueda de prensa en la Ciudad Deportiva, y estará compuesto por 28 jugadores de los que solo 12 pertenecieron al equipo campeón de la 53 Serie Nacional (de ellos 10 pinareños y dos refuerzos anteriores) y 16 son nuevos refuerzos.
Esta vez, los directivos de la pelota cubana quieren jugársela al seguro, aunque un torneo corto es siempre una caja de sorpresa.
Crema y nata para ganar.
“Este grupo de peloteros es lo mejor que tenemos hoy en nuestro béisbol”, dijo Alfonso Urquiola, que dirigir’á la selección escogida. “No vamos solo a participar, sino también a competir”.
La 57 edición del torneo de campeones regionales se efectuará en San Juan, Puerto Rico, del 2 al 8 de febrero, de manera que los ajustes de estos Vegueros rearmados hasta los dientes comenzarán desde este mismo sábado en en estadio “Capitán San Luis” de la capital pinareña.
Según Urquiola, se respetó “la base del equipo que se tituló la temporada pasada”. Pero en realidad se trata de una selección muy diferente, pensada más como equipo Cuba que como representación vueltabajera.
Las razones están claras. Cuba quiere borrar la amarga experiencia de la edición anterior del clásico caribeño en Isla Margarita, Venezuela, donde la representación de Villa Clara terminó en último lugar, vapuleada por el resto de los asistentes. Los cubanos no asistían al torneo desde 1960 y realmente su reaparición fue para olvidar.
El equipo viajará a Puerto Rico el próximo fin de semana para abrir la competencia el lunes 2 de febrero frente a la escuadra de México, campeón de la Serie del Caribe. El abanderamiento de la delegación será el 28 de enero.
