El maratonista Alberto Cuba Carrero, una figura legendaria del atletismo y las carreras populares en Cuba, decidió darle un nuevo rumbo a su vida y pedir asilo político en Holanda durante un vuelo de regreso a la isla.
“Nosotros somos esclavos del gobierno cubano y estoy cansado de ser esclavo de los Castro… Cuando era atleta todo lo que ganaba en los maratones iba a manos del gobierno y ahora también”, manifestó Cuba en conversación telefónica con CaféFuerte.
Cuba, de 52 años, se desmarcó del grupo de ocho personas en una escala que hizo el avión en Ámsterdam, a finales de enero, y pidió asilo ante las autoridades holandesas. El maratonista egresaba a La Habana después de cumplir dos años de colaboración como entrenador de corredores de fondo en el Ministerio de Deportes de Djibuti, nación del Cuerno africano.
Su solicitud de asilo fue aceptada por un tribunal en Amsterdam, pero ahora su caso depende de la decisión de los Servicios de Inmigración de Holanda, que deberá anunciar su decisión en un plazo de 45 días. Mientras tanto, vive en un refugio para asilados.

“La posición de las autoridades holandesas es incorrecta. Ellos conocen muy poco de la realidad del cubano y piensan que todo lo que uno les cuenta es mentira…Voy a luchar por ser positivo y que los holandeses conozcan la realidad de mi país”, comentó el deportista.
Natural de Santa Clara, Cuba integró el equipo nacional de atletismo entre 1984 y 1998, y en ese período impuso seis récords nacionales absolutos al aire libre. Obtuvo medalla de plata en los 10,000 metros en los Juegos Centroamericanos y el Caribe, en 1989, pero su gran reconocimiento internacional fue su triunfo en la maratón de los Juegos Panamericanos de La Habana, en 1991.
