U.S. comedian CONAN O’BRIEN tapes late-night show in Cuba ** Comediante Conan O’Brien hace programa desde la Habana.

Popular comedian and talk-show host Conan O’Brien traveled to Cuba last week for a weekend taping of the March 4 broadcast of his late-night TBS show, the Deadline blog reported.

This is the first time that a program of this kind had been taped in Cuba since the United States imposed its economic embargo on the communist island in 1962.

Representatives of O’Brien’s show told Deadline that the episode is intended to give his audience a look at daily life in Cuba.

Last Dec. 17, U.S. President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro announced an historic agreement to begin the process of normalizing bilateral relations, which were broken more than 50 years ago.

On that same day, journalist Scott Pelley, with CBS News, presented his nightly newscast from Havana and in January Brian Williams with NBC and ABC’s David Muir did the same.

In January, the United States announced that it was easing its ban on travel by U.S. citizens to Cuba as well the prohibition on doing business with the island, a move that – among other things – allows the use of U.S. credit cards in Cuba.

Nevertheless, the full lifting of the trade embargo requires action by the U.S. Congress, where a bipartisan group of senators last week presented a bill that would do so thereby opening the door to U.S. exports to Cuba.

Meanwhile, the U.S. State Department last Friday published a new regulation allowing the import of certain products manufactured by “independent businessmen” in Cuba, although important exceptions remain in place.
