Mexico and Canada can help in restoring relations between the US and Cuba, said US Secretary of State John Kerry, after a meeting with his counterparts from the two neighboring countries.
“We will move closely with our neighbors in Canada and Mexico in these efforts” of reconciliation between Washington and Havana, Kerry said, noting the assistance that these countries may have in their communications with the Cuban government, reports AFP.
Mexico “is a very important partner” and “could be useful and important to explain (the Cuban government) what we’re trying to do and not do, and help make the process easy and effective,” he added.
Last week, the two countries held in Havana his first high-level talks in 35 years, facing the restoration of diplomatic relations, broken in 1961.
Both Mexico’s foreign minister, Jose Antonio Meade, as the Canadian Foreign Minister, John Baird, gave recognition to process initiated by Washington and Havana.
Kerry held the great support with the new US policy toward Cuba has among all countries of the American continent, but noted exception.
“Perhaps with the exception of one, which is not very happy if we begin to build relationships with others in the region,” he said, without further details.
“It is better for Latin America if the US and Cuba can find a way to reduce tensions and not divide nations,” said the diplomat.
Meanwhile, the Obama administration welcomed the first bill received in Congress to ease some of the embargo and proposes lifting restrictions on travel by US citizens to Cuba, reported EFE.
The so-called Law of Freedom to Travel to Cuba would end legal restrictions on travel laIisla for US citizens and legal residents in the US, as well as banking transactions related to those trips.

México y Canadá pueden ayudar en el restablecimiento de relaciones entre Estados Unidos y Cuba, dijo el secretario de Estado estadounidense John Kerry, tras una reunión con sus homólogos de los dos países vecinos.
“Vamos a avanzar muy de cerca con nuestros vecinos de Canadá y México en estos esfuerzos” de reconciliación entre Washington y La Habana, dijo Kerry, destacando la asistencia que esos países podrían tener en sus comunicaciones con el Gobierno cubano, informa AFP.
México “es un interlocutor muy importante” y “podría ser útil e importante explicando (al gobierno cubano) lo que estamos tratando de hacer y no hacer, y ayudar para que el proceso sea fácil y efectivo”, añadió.
La semana pasada, los dos países sostuvieron en La Habana sus primeras conversaciones de alto nivel en 35 años, de cara al restablecimiento de las relaciones diplomáticas, rotas en 1961.
Tanto el canciller de México, José Antonio Meade, como el ministro canadiense de Relaciones Exteriores, John Baird, dieron su reconocimiento al proceso iniciado por Washington y La Habana.
Kerry celebró el gran apoyo con que la nueva política estadounidense hacia Cuba cuenta entre todos los países del continente americano, aunque destacó una excepción.
“Quizás con la excepción de uno, que no está muy contento si empezamos a construir relaciones con otros en la región”, dijo, sin más detalles.
“Es mejor para América Latina si Estados Unidos y Cuba pueden encontrar una manera para reducir las tensiones y no dividir a las naciones”, apuntó el diplomático.
Mientras tanto, la Administración de Obama dio la bienvenida al primer proyecto de ley recibido en el Congreso para aliviar parte del embargo y que propone levantar las restricciones a los viajes de los ciudadanos estadounidenses a la Isla, reportó EFE.
La denominada Ley de Libertad para Viajar a Cuba pondría fin a las restricciones legales sobre los viajes a laIisla para los ciudadanos estadounidenses y residentes legales en EEUU, así como a las transacciones bancarias relacionadas con esos viajes.
