The things you probably do not know about Cuba.

.. My wife and I took a break from our trip from Colombia to Alaska by car and flew to the island where the revolution triumphed. We live almost two months two Cubans and that experience brought you these 13 things the Cuban daily to tell you.
1- The beef is illegal in Cuba. This is because, by the shortage of milk in the island, the revolutionary government of Fidel Castro decided that all cows were owned by the State to supply this food to children and seniors throughout the year. The most impressive of the matter: whoever kills a cow must pay a penalty of 20 years imprisonment. Still, there are gangs that sell meat at high prices.

OPINIONES: DOS MESES CON LOS CUBANOS.
Las cosas que probablemente usted no sabe sobre Cuba.

Tanto se habla de Cuba que muchas de las cosas que pasan en esta isla detenida en el tiempo terminan convirtiéndose en mitos. Tantas cosas pasan en este lugar sin fronteras que al final es mejor vivirla para entenderla.
Mi esposa y yo hicimos un paréntesis en nuestro viaje desde Colombia hasta Alaska en carro y volamos a la isla donde triunfó la revolución. Vivimos casi dos meses como dos cubanos más y de esa experiencia traje estas 13 cosas de la cotidianidad cubana para contarles a ustedes.
1- La carne de vaca es ilegal en Cuba. Esto se debe a que, por la escasez de leche en la isla, el gobierno revolucionario de Fidel Castro decidió que todas las vacas eran propiedad del Estado para abastecer de este alimento a niños y ancianos durante todo el año. Lo más impresionante del asunto: quien mate una vaca deberá pagar una pena de 20 años de prisión. Aún así, existen mafias que venden la carne a precios elevados.
2- Cada que llegan a una fila, los cubanos dicen “Ultima persona”, indicando que quieren saber quién está al final. También preguntan ¿Detrás de quién va?, por si a fila está desorganizada. 3- El país de las ciudades oscuras. Cuando los rayos del sol se esconden, todas, pero absolutamente todas las ciudades de Cuba entran en una oscuridad que raya con la penumbra. Tienen muy poca iluminación pública, lo que hace que se duerman temprano.
4- El país de las ciudades seguras. Pero a pesar de la oscuridad, Cuba se precia de ser uno de los países más seguros del planeta. A ninguna hora roban, no hay atracos en las calles y un asalto a mano armada es algo impensado. Ciudades como La Habana, Cienfuegos y Camagüey están llenas de cámaras de vigilancia y al parecer los ciudadanos le temen a las sanciones fuertes del gobierno revolucionario. 5- No hay agua potable. En ninguna ciudad de Cuba el agua se puede consumir directo del grifo. Y en cada lugar donde te ofrecen un vaso de agua parece que estuvieras bebiendo agua de una piscina. Los cubanos tratan el agua por sus propios medios, hirviéndola y añadiéndole gotas de hipoclorito.
6- Frío en el Caribe. Aunque cueste creerlo, hay días en Cuba que son extremadamente fríos. Este año, en nuestro viaje, las temperaturas descendieron a un récord histórico de un grado centígrado. Lleve abrigo, podría necesitarlo.
7- El transporte más barato del mundo. Por movilizarse dentro de las ciudades, los cubanos deben pagar precios irrisorios, casi que simbólicos. Cada pasaje tiene el costo de 40 centavos de peso cubano, unos $40 pesos colombianos. O sea que, con lo que paga un tiquete de bus en una ciudad como Bogotá o Cali, puede viajar 47 veces en una guagua (así le dicen a los buses en Cuba).
8- Es muy común encontrarse en los árboles de los parques rastros de santería. Colillas de habanos clavadas con puntillas a los troncos, palos con cintas rojas y púrpuras colgando de las ramas, plumas, cabezas de aves como gallos y gallinas. No entendí el significado, y cuando traté de acercarme alguien me abordó de manera un poco hostil.
9- En ningún restaurante hay una carta completa. No se tome la molestia de revisar la carta para luego pedir el plato de su preferencia. Le van a decir “No hay”. Bueno, entonces este otro. “Tampoco hay”. Mi recomendación es que al llegar a cualquier lugar donde vendan comidas, primero pregunte: ¿Qué hay?.
10- La imagen más reproducida en Cuba no es la de Fidel ni la del Ché Guevara. Por todas partes y en todos los medios posibles se reproduce la cara del prócer José Martí. Se habla de él en los medios, los parques y las avenidas llevan su nombre y hay bustos suyos por toda Cuba. Incluso, llegamos a pensar que hay una fábrica nacional de cabezas de José Martí en algún lugar de Cuba.
11- La propaganda revolucionaria es omnipresente 56 años después. En pueblo grande o pequeño, en carretera o edificio, en mural o cartel, siempre hay una imagen que le recuerda a los ciudadanos que el socialismo es la única opción que existe. Repiten las frases de los próceres. Dicen patria o muerte, socialismo o muerte, o hasta la victoria siempre. A falta de avisos luminosos y publicidad de marcas, los rostros barbados que hablan desde la pared son el plato común en todo el país.
12- El reguetón hizo su metástasis maligna en Cuba. ¿Compay Segundo? ¿Benny Moré? ¿Buena Vista Social Club? No señores. Hoy el reguetón es el que manda en el espectro sonoro cubano. Desde que ingresó a la isla, la música tradicional que uno espera encontrar ya parece ser parte exclusiva de la banda sonora de los turistas. Si como yo, cree que esta pseudomúsica es un adefesio, no se imagina lo que es el reguetón cubano. Canciones como ‘Mami que rico se te ve el bikini’ o ‘Dame un besito con lengua’ son muy populares por estos días. Simplemente inaudible.
13- Las drogas en Cuba son como las brujas: nadie las ha visto pero de que las hay las hay. Y sí que las hay, por montones y carísimas. A los colombianos nos sueltan la información así como así, porque creen que estamos buscando drogas todo el tiempo. Un gramo de coca, por ejemplo, vale 80 euros.
