Cuban Journalists demand the need for the press ‘put bare the inadequacies in some sectors of society’.

Members of the Union of Journalists of Cuba (UPEC) has prepared a report on the practice of journalism on Cuban television whose findings provide a devastating portrait of the shortcomings of the profession on the island. They criticize the “triumphalism” and instead suggest the need to “lay bare” the inadequacies of certain sectors of society.

Some details of the report, which was discussed with Cuban Vice President Miguel Diaz-Canel, have appeared on the website of the UPEC. CUBA: PUBLICAN DEMOLEDOR INFORME SOBRE LAS CARENCIAS DEL PERIODISMO OFICIAL.

Periodistas cubanos reclaman la necesidad de que la prensa ‘ponga al desnudo las insuficiencias en algunos sectores de la sociedad’.

Miembros de la Unión de Periodistas de Cuba (UPEC) han elaborado un informe sobre el ejercicio del periodismo en la televisión cubana cuyas conclusiones ofrecen un retrato demoledor sobre las carencias de la profesión en la Isla. Critican el “triunfalismo” y, en su lugar, sugieren la necesidad de “poner al desnudo” las insuficiencias de ciertos sectores de la sociedad.

Algunos detalles del informe, que se ha discutido con el vicepresidente cubano Miguel Díaz-Canel, han aparecido en la web de la UPEC. En la nota se exponen las cuestiones que contiene el informe: los problemas materiales, pero también de fondo, la dificultad en el acceso a las fuentes o la censura ejercida en los medios, entre otros aspectos.

El informe explica que en la televisión los periodistas, camarógrafos, editores y directores continúan enfrentando problemas con la vieja técnica: cámaras insuficientes, cubículos de edición en mal estado técnico y carencia de transporte, entre otros.

Además de problemas técnicos, el informe incide también en problemas de fondo: “Nuestros reportes tienen que ser profundos, esclarecedores y convincentes, que pongan al desnudo las insuficiencias en algunos sectores de la sociedad. Para eso hay que llegar hasta el final con la investigación periodística, por muchas trabas que nos pongan… que no sea un periodismo complaciente o triunfalista que hace más daño que una dura crítica”.

Aunque en los últimos tiempos “hay una mayor apertura de las fuentes” y “se han eliminado los vacíos informativos y las dilaciones”, el periodista “está para exponer los hechos, denunciar y dar seguimiento hasta completar su trabajo”.

El periodista “debe ser respaldado por quienes dirigen para evitar que los problemas continúen y no perder credibilidad”, recuerda el informe.

El documento también precisa que son necesarios un marco legal y una política editorial definida, porque muchas veces algunos trabajos no salen al aire por el criterio de una persona que, en ocasiones, ni siquiera es especialista en el tema.

En el debate sobre el informe surgió también la preocupación por malas experiencias de proponer temas, que son rechazados con el escudo de regulaciones u orientaciones que no se sabe de dónde vienen, dando espacio a la duda.

Se aportaron ejemplos de asuntos de interés social cuya respuesta es la publicación de notas oficiales y luego no se ofrecen otras vías de información sobre el tema: “Es fundamental que los dirigentes tengan conversaciones con la prensa. Y si no se da una conferencia de prensa, por ejemplo, el periodista tiene que tener la capacidad de llegar a un ministerio, tocar la puerta y publicar cuando un funcionario no quiera conceder entrevistas”.

Por ello, aseguran, “más allá del tema del salario y de las condiciones materiales, se puede hacer un mejor periodismo con un marco laboral diferente, en el que los trabajos sean revisados por los directores de emisión cuya responsabilidad sería total. Es importante que se logre ese grado de independencia”.

Por otra parte, algunos participantes en el debate intervinieron para subrayar que es imprescindible una mayor preparación de periodistas y directivos para enfrentar los retos de las tecnologías y aprovechar sus herramientas.

Díaz-Canel dice que hay problemas de gestión en los medios

“Hay problemas de gestión en los medios, afirmó Miguel Díaz-Canel. “Y mientras no los identifiquemos no vamos a tener ni la estructura ni el personal necesario para solucionarlos”, agregó.

Para ello, manifestó, “tiene que haber un programa de dirección que ofrezca confianza, pues es también un tema de sentimiento, compromiso y talento, donde participen jóvenes y experimentados. No puede haber un enfoque generacional antagónico, sino basado en el respeto entre todos y entre dirigentes y subordinados”.
