CUBANISMS: “ALL THE BLAME BELONGS TO “EL TOTÍ”!
“El Totí is a small bird abundant in the Cuban countryside. In the eastern region of Cuba they are called choncholí. It belongs to the family of corvids; It has black feathers and curved beak and eats seeds and insects.

CUBANISMOS: “LA CULPA DE TODO LA TIENE “EL TOTÍ”!
El totí es un pájaro pequeño que abunda mucho en la campiña cubana. En la región oriental de Cuba se les llama choncholí. Pertenece a la familia de los córvidos; tiene plumaje negro y pico encorvado y se alimenta de semillas e insectos.
Don Fernando Ortiz dice en su libro Nuevo Catauro de Cubanismos que este pequeño plumífero hacía tanto daño a las cosechas y aún al azúcar almacenado, que era costumbre en los antiguos ingenios poner a un esclavo a cuidar que los totíes no se acercaran a picotear los sacos de azúcar o de granos almacenados.
Los esclavos, puestos a cuidar lo que a ellos les faltaba, solían robar de los sacos almacenados y echarle la culpa de las faltas a los totíes, cuando el mayoral o el amo les reclamaban.
Así surgió la frase “la culpa de todo la tuvo el totí”, que socorridamente usamos los cubanos para descargar nuestra responsabilidad, cuando somos sorprendidos infragante en alguna falta.
