Cuban students wishing to study in the US will first have to pass exams in English on the island in order to qualify for admission to American universities.
Two college entrance exams soon be offered in Cuba to study in the United States, which shows the interest of the educational institutions of the country to recruit prospective students of the communist nation, reported Wednesday the Wall Street Journal.
“Four Cuban students will sit on June 27 in Havana for the Test of English as a Foreign Language, a standardized test required for admission to non-native speakers in many universities in the US, UK, Australia and other countries” according to the nonprofit Educational Testing Service, which administers the exam.
The Educational Testing Service also said it plans to offer the GRE General Test, a verbal entrance exam graduate of quantitative reasoning and analytical writing, to be held in Cuba in early October.
The four Cubans will be presented to the English test in Havana were recorded from outside the island, the service said.
Another difficulty is finding adequate testing facilities with sound. Santiago said he is currently working with two Cuban universities to certify their computer labs as official examination centers.
Beyond the four students test scheduled for this month, so far no new dates. It is too early to assess the demand for these examinations on the island, said Santiago.
“This is still very new,” he said. “There’s still a lot of issues that must be resolved”.
“One factor that is considered to be the development of financial and technological infrastructure of Cuba, since they have considerable logistical obstacles,” said the testing service.
“The examination takes place in Cuba as a response to the demand of American universities seeking to attract Cuban students after relations between States and Cuba normalize” said Jose Santiago, director of business GRE at the Educational Testing Service.
“There has been great interest in both the US side and by the Cuban side in making evidence available to Cuban students,” he said.

Los estudiantes cubanos que deseen estudiar en EEUU primero tendrán que pasar exámenes de inglés en la Isla para poder calificar en el ingreso a las universidades estadounidenses.
Dos exámenes de ingreso universitario pronto se ofrecerán en Cuba para estudiar en Estados Unidos, lo cual pone de manifiesto el interés de las instituciones educativas de ese país para reclutar a los futuros estudiantes de la nación comunista, informa este miércoles The Wall Street Journal.
“Cuatro estudiantes cubanos se sentarán el 27 de junio en La Habana para el examen de inglés como Lengua Extranjera, una prueba estandarizada requerida para la admisión de los hablantes no nativos en muchas universidades en Estados Unidos, Reino Unido, Australia y otros países”, según la organización no lucrativa Educational Testing Service, que administra el examen.
El Educational Testing Service también dijo que planea ofrecer el GRE General Test, que es un examen de admisión de postgrado verbal de razonamiento cuantitativo y escritura analítica, que se realizará en Cuba a principios de octubre.
Los cuatro cubanos que se presentarán al examen de inglés en La Habana fueron registrados desde fuera de la Isla, indicó el servicio.
