‘LA BOLITA’: EL JUEGO MÁS POPULAR EN LA CUBA DE HOY.
Chapados a la antigua, los recolectores de apuestas del popular juego de la bolita, más conocidos como boliteros o apuntadores, siguen aferrados al pequeño papel donde anotan la lista de quienes aspiran a ganar algo en la más antigua lotería ilegal cubana.
“Pónmele 5 al 5, que anoche soñé con una monja”, dice un vecino en plena calle, mientras Manolo, un viejo apuntador del habanero barrio de Atarés, desenrolla su larga tira de papel. En la primera columna anota , con un garabato ilegible, el nombre del jugador, y en las dos siguientes coloca muy claramente la cifra propuesta y la cantidad de dinero apostado.
“Si llega la fiana, este papel lo estrujo, lo boto en la primera alcantarilla y ya no hay pruebas”, dice Manolo con aires de hombre experimentado. Su sobrina, que vive en Oklahoma, le ha regalado una tablet repleta de aplicaciones, pero él ha oído decir que toda información borrada de estos artilugios tecnológicos siempre puede ser recuperada, así que no se arriesga a usarlo en su diario trabajo. “Tampoco voy a tirar esa cosa en la alcantarilla”, concluye sonriente.
Confiar en la suerte ha sido un componente importante de la personalidad de los cubanos. Entre los recuerdos más tempranos que guarda Manolo está el de una tarde en que su padre fue a cortarse el pelo y, entre el olor de la colonia y el sonido de las tijeras, el barbero aseguró: “si le quitan el juego al cubano, ahí sí que se cae esto”. Desde entonces ha pasado más de medio siglo y en lugar de derrumbarse el sistema, la gente sumergió en la ilegalidad sus gustos por los juegos de azar.
El juego de mayor arraigo ha sido la bolita, que consiste en elegir un número del 1 al 100 y apostar cierta cantidad de dinero a que ese dígito aparecerá incluido al final del número más largo que saldrá premiado en una lotería oficial.

Las leyes del país prohíben de manera terminante la realización de esta actividad. Sin embargo, se lleva a cabo a diario en todo el territorio nacional de forma masiva, al extremo que ya casi se gritan los números premiados en plena calle.
EL ORDEN DE FUNCIONAMIENTO.
El entramado que hace funcionar a la bolita incluye al apuntador, o bolitero, que va anotando los números solicitados por sus clientes. También está el mensajero, un hombre de confianza que se dedica a recoger los listados y el dinero de los diferentes apuntadores. En redes de mayor complejidad también hay un colector, que es el enlace con el banco, pieza central de la pirámide. Si alguno de los intermediarios es sorprendido por las autoridades, el banco se encarga de ayudarlo desde el punto de vista económico, ya sea resarciéndolo con posterioridad o ayudándolo a sobornar a la policía. De esa manera se establecen vínculos de mucha fidelidad donde la delación tiene poca incidencia.
El carácter de incógnito del banco, que se traslada de manera frecuente de un sitio hacia otro para evitar ser detectado por la policía, es esencial para que todo funcione. En él se analizan los listados entregados y se cuenta la recaudación para determinar quiénes son los ganadores, basados en la Lotto de Miami, que brinda la confiabilidad de los resultados y que se oye a través de las emisoras de onda corta. El banco es el que gana la mayor parte de lo recaudado, pero también tiene la responsabilidad de pagar a los premiados. Un error o un descuido pueden hacerle perder la clientela.
Cuando se determina quiénes son los afortunados, el dinero baja a través de toda la estructura ilegal hasta llegar a la viejecita que la noche anterior soñó con un diente roto y por eso apostó al ocho que es muerto; o al jovencito que le puso diez pesos al dos porque vio una mariposa posada en el marco de su ventana.
Las personas pueden apostar por números aislados divididos en dos modos “fijos y corridos”. En caso de salir premiado un fijo, el agraciado recibe 75 pesos cubanos por cada peso invertido, mientras que los corridos se gratifican con 25 por cada uno. Los más añorados y difíciles son los llamados “parlé” (dos guarismos), que si el cliente acierta recibe entre 900 a 1.000 pesos moneda nacional. Un paso más allá en el riesgo es “el candado”, donde se apuesta por tres cifras o más, lo que lo hace más complicado ganar pero más gratificante monetariamente.

Los empleados que atienden el negocio ganan en proporción a lo recaudado. El apuntador obtiene un 20% por cada número suelto y un 30% por las combinaciones. Esto brinda un salario diario aceptable en comparación con los sueldos estatales. Como la operación se lleva a cabo hasta dos veces al día, el bolitero tiene una mejor vida que un neurocirujano o un ingeniero químico… aunque con más riesgos.
Dentro de una misma zona o barriada pequeña pueden coexistir hasta tres apuntadores y en algunos casos más, con rentabilidad para todos. El caudal de dinero que se mueve en estas operaciones clandestinas permite mantener a varios empleados a tiempo completo, conocidos por todos los residentes del lugar. Algunos llevan décadas en el negocio, sin haber sufrido jamás ni una multa o interrogatorio policial.
No pocos especulan que hay hasta cierta complicidad entre las fuerzas del orden y los involucrados en la bolita. “Dejan que la gente juegue para que se entretengan en algo”, explica Manolo. Según su experiencia aquí “todo el mundo juega” y aunque parezcan exageradas sus palabras, lo cierto es que participan todo tipo de personas: amas de casa, funcionarios estatales, cuentapropistas y desde luego, militares, policías, presidentes de CDR, militantes del partido comunista y opositores políticos.
Como cada número puede significar algo, las apuestas se relacionan con sueños o con la reiterada presencia de cualquier cosa, sea una araña o una piedra preciosa. A veces, la prensa oficial es quien, sin proponérselo, hace la sugerencia, cuando en algún titular de primera plana inserta un número y la gente sale como loca a apostar a ese dígito.
“A veces cuando hay un rumor de que Fidel Castro se murió, nos caen un montón de apuestas al 64 que es muerto grande”, detalla Manolo. “Pero ya la gente se cansó de esa historia y hace rato no lo juegan”, aclara con malicia.
