La Casa Blanca anunció este martes que está dispuesta a vetar una ley en discusión en el Congreso sobre presupuestos para el sector de transporte urbano, que en sus disposiciones restringe los viajes a Cuba, reporta la AFP.
El extenso proyecto de ley, de 158 páginas e impulsado por el legislador de origen cubano Mario Díaz-Balart, establece normas para el uso de los presupuestos destinados al transporte y desarrollo urbano para el año fiscal que finaliza en septiembre de 2016; la legislación incluye provisiones altamente cuestionables, entre ellas medidas que restringirían viajes a Cuba”, añadió.
En el caso de que Barack Obama reciba esta ley “sus asesores especiales recomendarán que el presidente aplique el veto”, advirtió la Casa Blanca.
Indicó que, en especial, “objeta con firmeza el lenguaje utilizado” en dos secciones del proyecto de ley “que restringirían vuelos y barcos a Cuba e implementarían restricciones innecesarias en opciones de viajes a Cuba por motivos educacionales, religiosos y otros”.
La Sección 193 del proyecto de ley sobre transporte, por ejemplo, determina que los fondos “no podrán ser usados para facilitar nuevos vuelos originados en Estados Unidos si tales vuelos aterrizarían en, o pasarían sobre, propiedad confiscada por el Gobierno de Cuba”.
De igual forma, la sección 414 veta el uso de fondos del presupuesto por parte de la Comisión Marítima Federal o su administración “para emitir licencias o certificados para navíos comerciales” que hayan anclado, en los últimos seis meses, a menos de “siete millas de un puesto o propiedad que haya sido confiscado, en todo o en parte, por el Gobierno de Cuba”.
