United States warned not plan to change its immigration policy toward Cuba
The Obama administration warned in an official note, that will not alter the Cuban Adjustment Act, which allows all islanders refugees who reach US soil to stay and apply for residency.
The US government does not plan to change, for now, its immigration policy in relation to Cuba, despite the announcement of resumption of diplomatic relations from July 20, reported Monday the State Department.
“The administration has no plans to alter its current immigration policy, including the Cuban Adjustment Act,” the US Foreign Ministry in a note.
Under the Cuban Adjustment Act of 1966, Cuban refugees who reach US soil are entitled to stay and apply for residency, a benefit not offered to anyone of another nationality. By that law, Cuban immigrants, with or without visa, they can get a job and obtain permanent residency in a year.
Meanwhile, known as “wet foot, dry foot” policy means that only those Cubans intercepted at sea are sent back to their country.
In the note, the United States supports a “safe, legal and orderly migration” from Cuba and the “full implementation of the migratory agreements” with that country. “The embargo against Cuba is still in force and legislative action is required to lift. In addition, the rules on travel by US citizens to Cuba remain in effect,” said State Department.
US Foreign Ministry noted that current rules only recognize 12 categories of permits to travel to Cuba and that the Treasury Department “will continue to administer the regulations to provide general licenses” to those trips are maintained.
The two governments announced the decision to restore diplomatic relations after more than half a century break, and the reopening of their embassies, last Wednesday.
“Normalize these relations is a long and thorough process that will require continuous interaction and dialogue between the two governments, based on mutual respect. There will be areas of cooperation with the Cubans and still continue to have differences,” said the note on Monday.

Estados Unidos advierte que no planea modificar su política migratoria hacia Cuba
La Administración Obama advirtió, en una nota oficial, que no alterará la Ley de Ajuste Cubano, que permite a todos los refugiados isleños que llegan a suelo estadounidense quedarse y solicitar la residencia.
El gobierno de Estados Unidos no planea modificar, por ahora, su política migratoria con relación a Cuba, a pesar del anuncio de restablecimiento de relaciones diplomáticas a partir del 20 de julio, informó este lunes el Departamento de Estado.
“La Administración no tiene planes de alterar su política migratoria actual, incluyendo la Ley de Ajuste Cubano”, señaló la Cancillería estadounidense en una nota.
En virtud de la Ley de Ajuste Cubano de 1966, los refugiados cubanos que llegan a suelo estadounidense tienen derecho a quedarse y solicitar la residencia, un beneficio que no se ofrece a cualquier persona de otra nacionalidad. Mediante esa ley, los inmigrantes cubanos, tengan o no visa, pueden conseguir empleo y obtener la residencia permanente en un año.
Mientras, la política conocida con el nombre de “pies mojados, pies secos” significa que sólo aquellos cubanos interceptados en el mar son enviados de vuelta a su país.
En la nota, Estados Unidos apoya una “migración segura, legal y ordenada” desde Cuba y la “completa implementación de los acuerdos migratorios existentes” con ese país. “El embargo a Cuba está aún vigente y se requiere acción legislativa para levantarlo. Además, las reglas sobre viajes de ciudadanos estadounidenses a Cuba permanecen en efecto”, apuntó el Departamento de Estado.
La Cancillería estadounidense recordó que se mantienen vigentes normas que apenas reconocen 12 categorías de autorizaciones para viajar a Cuba y que el Departamento del Tesoro “continuará administrando las regulaciones para proporcionar licencias generales” para esos viajes.
Los dos gobiernos anunciaron, el pasado miércoles, la decisión de restablecer sus relaciones diplomáticas después de más de medio siglo de ruptura, así como la reapertura de sus respectivas embajadas.
“Normalizar esas relaciones es un proceso largo y completo que requerirá interacción continua y diálogo entre los dos gobiernos, basados en el respeto mutuo. Habrá áreas de cooperación con los cubanos y aún continuaremos teniendo diferencias”, apuntó la nota de este lunes.
