The Cuban Parliament opened one of its biannual meetings with the presence of President Raul Castro and the novelty of having opened a Twitter account and another in Facebook, unusual media in state agencies on the island.

The sessions are behind closed doors, but the official media reported on the assistance of Castro, according to Cuban law who is also a deputy.
Castro has not made any public statements since Cuba and the United States agreed earlier this month on 20 July that diplomatic relations would resume.
Among those invited to the Assembly of People’s Power, as designated by parliament, were Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino and Rene Gonzalez, the five intelligence agents for more than a decade were imprisoned in the United States and Cuba considered heroes for their efforts to prevent attacks on the island.
Three of the “five” were released on 17 December last year as part of the announcement of restoring diplomatic process and a subsequent normalization of relations with the United States.
The local media also reported that the Assembly will from now on with an account on the social network Twitter under the userAsambleaCuba and another in Facebook under the name “Cuba National Assembly.” Although many official institutions in other countries have such mechanisms to report on their activities on the island it is unusual in part because of the lack of Internet connectivity.

El Parlamento cubano abrió una de sus reuniones bianuales con la presencia del presidente Raúl Castro y la novedad de haber inaugurado una cuenta de Twitter y otra en Facebook, medios inusuales de comunicación en los organismos estatales de la isla.
Las sesiones son a puertas cerradas, pero los medios de comunicación oficiales informaron sobre la asistencia de Castro, quien según la ley cubana también es diputado.

Castro no ha realizado declaraciones públicas desde que Cuba y Estados Unidos acordaron a comienzo de mes que el 20 de julio que retomarían sus relaciones diplomáticas.
Entre los invitados a la Asamblea del Poder Popular, como se designa al parlamento, estuvieron Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González, Ramón Labañino y René González, los cinco agentes de inteligencia que por más de una década estuvieron presos en Estados Unidos y que Cuba considera héroes por su labor de prevención de ataques contra la isla.
Tres de “los cinco” fueron liberados el 17 de diciembre pasado como parte del anuncio del proceso de restablecimiento diplomático y de una posterior normalización de las relaciones con Estados Unidos.
Los medios de prensa locales también informaron que la Asamblea contará desde ahora con una cuenta en la red social Twitter bajo el usuario @AsambleaCuba y otra en Facebook bajo el nombre “Asamblea Nacional Cuba” . Aunque muchas instituciones oficiales de otros países tienen este tipo de mecanismos para informar de sus actividades, en la isla es inusual en parte dada la poca conectividad de internet.

“No es posible la comunicación sin la interacción con las personas porque en el sistema político cubano, este intercambio de ideas permite ir construyendo el consenso” , dijo sobre la iniciativa Tubal Páez, director de Comunicación del legislativo a la Agencia de Información Nacional.
El parlamento cubano se reúne habitualmente dos veces al año –en julio y diciembre — de manera plenaria y los diputados no reciben pago por su labor, sino que siguen integrados a sus trabajos y profesiones. Durante el resto del año la Asamblea cuenta con el trabajo de funcionarios que dan continuidad a los mandatos de los legisladores.
