Cuban actor Andy Garcia received on Friday the Leopard Club Award, an honorary award from the Locarno International Film Festival, Switzerland, which honors figures who have left their mark on the collective imagination with their work.

El actor cubano Andy García recibió este viernes el Leopard Club Award, galardón honorífico del Festival Internacional de Cine de Locarno, Suiza, que distingue a figuras que hayan dejado huella en el imaginario colectivo con su trabajo.
En declaraciones recogidas por el diario catalán El Periódico, García dijo que mantiene intacto el entusiasmo que sintió cuando se decidió por el arte dramático.
“Mi padre solía decirme: nunca des un paso atrás. Y esa ha sido siempre mi filosofía vital. Los obstáculos no me asustan”, aseguró.
Sobre los altibajos de su carrera, afirmó: “No es que Hollywood la tenga tomada conmigo, sino simplemente que los estudios ya no están interesados en la creatividad. Todo ha ido a peor allí. Estoy seguro de que Los intocables, de Eliot Ness, la película que me dio a conocer hace 30 años, hoy no encontraría financiación”.
“Sigo siendo un romántico y un idealista, y por eso creo que los sueños pueden cumplirse. Muchos de los que tenía entonces lo hicieron, pero sigo soñando. Y hoy día mi gran sueño es ver Cuba en libertad”, declaró el actor, que abandonó la Isla con sus padres cuando tenía cinco años de edad.
Criticó el reciente acercamiento del Gobierno de Barack Obama a La Habana.
“La revolución cubana prometía elecciones y pluralismo democrático, y aún estamos esperando. Cualquier ayuda que se dé al régimen castrista solo va a fortalecer a ese gobierno y, por tanto, a traer más represión. Relajando el embargo, Estados Unidos perpetúa a los Castro”, opinó.
El Festival de Cine de Locarno homenajeó este año con su premio a la Excelencia al actor Edward Norton. El galardón reconoce a figuras que enriquecieron el cine con un “aporte único”.
