The congressmen for Florida Republicans Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Mario Diaz-Balart Carlos Curbelo Thursday asked the authorities of the US Immigration expedite the processing of shelter to Cuban doctors stranded in Colombia, EFE reported.
In a letter to Leon Rodriguez, director of Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), Congress noted that there are still many unresolved processes, including several dating back to last February.
At least a thousand Cuban health professionals have fled Venezuela, which provided services sent by Havana from Bogota and seek refuge in the United States under the program known as the Cuban Medical Professional Parole (CMPP, for its acronym in English ).
“My colleagues and I are committed to ensuring adequate attention to those who took a big risk running medical missions in order to escape the terrible forced labor environment orchestrated by the tyrannical regime of Castro” Ros-Lehtinen said.
The lawmakers, all of Cuban origin, urged Rodriguez to “assist applicants in Colombia and our US Embassy to process these cases and find a solution for Cuban medical professionals are eligible to come to America.”
The CMPP was created in 2006 by the government of President George W. Bush (2001-2009) to assist the Cuban health professionals escaping missions in third countries.
The three congressmen expressed their support for the CMPP, considering that helps these professionals to “escape the abysmal wages, poor working conditions and constant surveillance ordered by Castro”.
According to the Solidarity Without Borders (SSF) organization, the delay in the processing of special visas in the US has created a situation of economic insecurity among Cubans stranded in Colombia.
The organization, based in Miami, has the mission of supporting health professionals from other countries to help them integrate into the American system.

Los congresistas republicanos por Florida Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Mario Díaz-Balart y Carlos Curbelo pidieron este jueves a las autoridades de Inmigración de Estados Unidos agilizar el trámite de refugio a médicos cubanos varados en Colombia, reporta EFE.
En una carta dirigida a León Rodríguez, director del Servicio de Inmigración y Ciudadanía (USCIS), los congresistas señalaron que aún hay muchos procesos sin resolver, entre ellos varios que se remontan a febrero pasado.
Por lo menos un millar de profesionales de la salud cubanos han huido de Venezuela, donde prestaban sus servicios enviados por La Habana, y buscan desde Bogotá refugio en Estados Unidos bajo el programa conocido como Cuban Medical Professional Parole (CMPP, por sus siglas en inglés).
“Mis colegas y yo estamos comprometidos a garantizar la atención adecuada a aquellos que tomaron un gran riesgo huyendo de misiones médicas con el fin de escapar del entorno de trabajo forzado horrible orquestado por el régimen tiránico de Castro”, dijo Ros-Lehtinen.
Los legisladores, todos de origen cubano, instaron a Rodríguez a “asistir a los solicitantes en Colombia y a nuestra embajada de Estados Unidos para procesar estos casos y encontrar una solución para aquellos profesionales médicos cubanos que son elegibles para venir a Estados Unidos”.
El CMPP fue creado en 2006 por el Gobierno del presidente George W. Bush (2001-2009) para asistir a profesionales de la salud cubanos que escapan de misiones en terceros países.
Los tres congresistas mostraron su apoyo al CMPP, al considerar que ayuda a estos profesionales a “escapar de los abismales salarios, condiciones de trabajo deficientes y la constante vigilancia ordenada por Castro”.
Según la organización Solidaridad Sin Fronteras (SSF), la dilación en la tramitación de los visados especiales en Estados Unidos ha creado una situación de precariedad económica entre los cubanos varados en Colombia.
La organización, con sede en Miami, tiene como misión el apoyo a los profesionales de la salud de otros países para ayudarles a integrarse en el sistema estadounidense.
