CUBAN MUSICIAN EXPECTING TO ENTRY IN THE ‘GUINNESS WORLD OF RECORDS’ AS THE OLDEST ACTIVE PERFORMER.
He looks, with its nearly century and very thin, slim figure in the Casa de la Trova in Holguin, along with The Six Son, a group that, despite the name, has seven musicians. The musician lives alone in a humble little room in the New Deal Llano, three kilometers from the center of the city of Holguin. To move sometimes take the bus, but almost always gives to walk. Se le ve, con su figura casi centenaria y muy delgada, delgada, en la Casa de la Trova de Holguín, junto a Los Seis del Son, una agrupación que, pese al nombre, cuenta con siete músicos. Ya cumplidos los 97 años, Ricardo Simón Antonio toca el cuatro y aspira a entrar en el libro Guinness de los récords por ser el músico en activo más viejo de Cuba y quizás del mundo.
Minutos antes de comenzar una de sus presentaciones y en medio del bullicio festivo del lugar, conversó con 14ymedio sobre el largo camino que ha recorrido hasta ahora, la música y su salud. Asegura que no le duelen “ni los callos de los pies” y, aunque aprendió el instrumento de forma autodidacta, después se perfeccionó con profesores particulares.

“También toco la guitarra y el tres, pero prefiero el cuatro porque tiene más recorrido musical y suena más bonito”, confiesa. Desde pequeño presenció fiestas familiares donde sus parientes tocaban instrumentos de percusión y eso le creó un oído musical para apreciar los ritmos cubanos, que son los que más le gustan.
Simón, que nació el 5 de septiembre de 1918 en el municipio holguinero de Cueto, hace gala de una lucidez asombrosa para su edad. Sus padres fueron inmigrantes haitianos y le regalaron una pequeña guitarra cuando tenía siete años. De ellos heredó también el francés, que habla con fluidez y gracia.
Alguien se acerca a la mesa y brinda un trago de ron al casi centenario músico, pero él no acepta. “Lo único que tomo es esto”, responde cortésmente al señalar una latica con refresco que está sobre la mesa.

Comienza la música y las improvisaciones que logra con las cuerdas de su cuatro provocan exclamaciones de sorpresa y admiración en el público.
Después de tres sones y un bolero se reanuda la conversación, pero en esta ocasión se suma Reinaldo Blez, el mánager del septeto que asegura que durante los ensayos Simón realiza aportes en la dirección musical y que domina los casi 50 temas del repertorio del conjunto.
“El que más me gusta es Alma como la mía, un bolero del compositor holguinero Ignacio Márquez”, señala el anciano. Blez acota que la dirección municipal de cultura le realizó un homenaje en el mes de enero y allí le entregaron el trofeo Tesoro humano vivo del territorio holguinero.
Simón explica que en su carrera fue decisivo formar parte del grupo del reconocido músico holguinero Faustino Oramas, El Guayabero. “Yo fui uno de los fundadores de la agrupación y estuve junto a él desde la década del setenta hasta los años noventa, cuando falleció”.
“Viajé por toda Cuba y aprendí mucho”, recuerda de esta temporada. “Después integré el octeto Los sociales, y tras su desintegración fundamos, en 1993, Los Seis del Son, septeto con el que me mantengo hasta hoy”, cuenta sintetizando en unas breves frases décadas de vida.

El músico vive solo en un humilde cuartico en el reparto Nuevo Llano, a tres kilómetros del centro de la ciudad de Holguín. Para trasladarse a veces coge la guagua, pero casi siempre le da por caminar. Los músicos con los que comparte escenario son su familia. “Me atienden y me cuidan. En este septeto estaré hasta el último día de mi vida”, explica.
Si alguien le pide la fórmula para llegar a los cien años, su respuesta no se hace esperar: “Como vegetales, potaje de frijol negro, boniato hervido y no tengo ningún vicio: ni fumo ni tomo alcohol”. Sin embargo, la fuente de su lozanía parece ser otra. “Lo que me mantiene vivo es la música”, revela.
