For the first time, Cubans with relatives living outside the island, they can see them in real time while chatting, thanks to an application for video calls has been a success in the Caribbean.
Using one of the 35 points internet, recently installed by the Cuban government in different areas of the country, Cubans can finally see their families face when they use the application called Imo.
“This is great to communicate with family, friends, overseas, or anywhere in the world,” said Yoel Gonzalez, a Havana resident.
Unlike other similar applications such as Skype or Viber popular, Imo it is not blocked by the Cuban government, and anyone can download it for free from the virtual store for Android smartphones.
“This is great because … until recently nothing was on the phone, and when you could, of course. And now, this is happiness,” says Rosaly Vinal, a user of the Internet in Havana.
Cuba has one of the indices lower internet penetration worldwide, estimated at 5 percent. But with this application, some Cubans see a better future.

Por primera vez, los cubanos con familiares viviendo fuera de la Isla, podrán verlos en tiempo real, mientras conversan, gracias a una aplicación para realizar video llamadas que ha sido todo un éxito en las países del Caribe.
Utilizando uno de los 35 puntos de internet, instalados recientemente por el gobierno cubano en distintas zonas del país, los cubanos finalmente pueden ver a la cara a sus familiares cuando utilizan la aplicación llamada Imo.
“Esto es muy bueno para comunicarnos con familiares, amistades, en el extranjero, o en cualquier parte del mundo”, asegura Yoel González, un residente de La Habana.
A diferencia de otras aplicaciones similares como la popular Skype o Viber, Imo no es bloqueada por el gobierno cubano, y cualquier persona la puede descargar de forma gratuita desde la tienda virtual para teléfonos inteligentes Android.
“Esto es algo grandioso porque… hasta hace poco nada más era por teléfono, y cuando se podía, claro. Y ahora, esto es una felicidad”, comenta Rosaly Vinal, una usuaria de internet en La Habana.
Cuba tiene uno de los índices de penetración de internet más bajos en todo el mundo, calculado en el 5 por ciento. Pero con esta aplicación, algunos cubanos ven un mejor futuro.
“Hace algunos meses atrás, no había muchas cosas de las que se están haciendo ahora, que no existían, y que gracias a Dios, se nos han ido abriendo las puertas a los cubanos al internet, a la realidad mundial..”, sostiene Rafael Ravelo, quien visita uno de los puntos Wi-Fi, cada vez que puede.
No obstante, aunque las video llamadas son gratis, utilizar los puntos de internet tienen un precio de $2 dólares la hora, en una isla en donde el salario mínimo es de $20 dólares al mes.
